    Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for 2-3 temporary, part-time Biological Field Technicians near Casper and/or Douglas, Wyoming.

     

    Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.

     

    Key Details:

    • Start Date: April 15, 2023
    • Compensation: $16-$20/hour DOE
    • Hours: 30-40 hours per week, potential overtime
    • Project Length: April 15 to September 30, 2023, with potential for extension
    • Housing: $500/month reimbursement provided

     

    Job Summary:

    The successful candidates will be independent, self-motivated individuals, skilled in bird identification and with previous experience conducting avian surveys. The primary duties for the position will be conducting burrowing owl, mountain plover, long-billed curlew, upland sandpiper, and swift fox surveys at various locations in northeast Wyoming. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working alone in remote locations, extreme weather conditions, and rough terrains, and will have a passion for the outdoors. Experience driving off-road and operating an ATV are highly preferred. While these skills are preferred, training will be provided to all selected candidates, regardless of expertise.

     

    Responsibilities include:

    • Conduct field surveys for burrowing owl, long-billed curlew, mountain plover, upland sandpiper, and swift fox.
    • Use of a 4wd pickup and ATV.
    • Data collection will include use of detailed paper datasheets.
    • Navigation to survey locations with the use of field maps and GPS.
    • Field work will entail long hours of standing and observing, sometimes in inclement conditions and walking in varying terrain..
    • Early morning (sunrise) and late evening (sunset) working hours

     

    This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all duties that may be associated with this position.

     

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred; however, candidates with related experience will be considered.
    • Must be able to identify target birds by sight and sound.
    • Previous experience on biological field studies and/or prior field experience preferred, and must be highly organized.
    • Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment is required.
    • Applicants must be in good physical shape and able to hike long distances, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.
    • Experience operating an ATV. ATV safety certification is required and can be provided upon hire.
    • Must be able to maintain vehicles and equipment.
    • Must be able to work independently and as a team, interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, clients, landowners, and other technicians, and take direction from supervisors.
    • Ability to adhere to a varying schedule.
    • Technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots, etc.), clothing, and binoculars.
    • Follow all WEST safety protocols.
