    Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for 3 temporary full time, Biological Field Technicians.  Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data. 

     

    Key Details:

    • Compensation: $20.00 - $23.00 DOE
    • Housing: Shared housing (AirBNB) is provided for all positions
    • Start Date: September 28, 2022
    • End Date: Approximately March 15, 2023
    • Location: Canyon, TX
    • Additional Details:
      • Technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots, etc.), clothing, and binoculars.
      • Work vehicles and field equipment will be provided by WEST.
      • Position will consist of 40 hours per week on average. The work schedule will be 7 days on, 7 days off with 8-10 hour days. Four additional work days per month will be needed for additional fatality monitoring searches and associated bias trials.
      • Work days will include weekends and holidays.

     

    Job Summary:

    The successful candidate will be:

    • An independent self-motivated individual who is skilled in bird identification (specifically raptors with a focus on eagles) and has previous experience conducting avian use surveys at pre & post-construction sites.
    • Comfortable working in various (extreme) weather conditions and terrains and have a passion for the outdoors.
    • Able to work well as part of a team and individually, and be capable of effective communication and coordination with WEST supervisors and team members.
    • Well versed in eagle (both bald and golden) identification (at all life stages)

     

    Responsibilities include:

    • Conduct eagle biomonitoring and curtailment for eagle and raptor activity at an operational wind facility
    • Conduct standardized fatality searches; data collection will include use of detailed paper datasheets as well as the use of tablets
    • Conduct raptor carcass bias trials
    • Follow protocols to collect data, map flight paths, describe eagle behavior, and communicate curtailment orders with the facility operator

     

    This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of the duties which may be associated with this position.

     

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred
    • Must be able to identify birds by sight and sound for species in the Southern Plains region; candidates experienced in bird identification (specifically eagles) will be given preference
    • Previous experience on biological field studies and/or prior field experience preferred
    • Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment is required
    • Must be able to maintain equipment
    • Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, clients, landowners, and other technicians
    • Follow all WEST safety protocols 

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme
    • Field work will entail long hours of standing and observing, sometimes in inclement conditions and walking in varying terrain
      • Must be able to stand and/or walk for 8 – 10 hours per day

    After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  A valid driver’s license will be required.
