Biological Field Technician - (1208)

Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada, is looking for a temporary, full-time, Biological Field Technician to help investigate the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at various operational wind facilities near Springfield and Lincoln, Illinois, starting July 15, 2023, and ending October 20, 2023.

Key Details:

• Compensation: $15.00 - $19.00/hour, DOE
• Start date: July 15, 2023
• End date: October 15, 2023, with the possibility of extension on other projects
• Location: Near Springfield, IL and Lincoln, IL
• Additional details: Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate will be provided for personal vehicle use, including mileage accrued traveling from home to and from site. Applicants based within an hour of Mason City, IL are strongly encouraged to apply.  GPS unit, compass, camera, tablet and range finder will be provided by WEST. However, technicians must be equipped with and provide their own suitable safety toed boots (rugged hiking boots, etc.), and appropriate clothing.

Job Summary:

Biological field technicians will conduct standardized searches beneath wind turbines to locate and document bird and bat carcasses. Successful candidates must be able to follow field and data collection protocols, work well both independently and with others, and live and work in a rural setting. Training will be provided on bird/bat identification and field data collection. An average work week may include 30-40 hours for full-time employees, though there may be weeks requiring shorter or longer hours. Travel to and from the site will be required; personal vehicle use will be reimbursed for mileage at the current federal standard rate, or in some cases, a field vehicle may be provided if necessary. Successful candidates will work independently, gaining hands-on field experience collecting scientific data used to assess the impacts of wind turbines on bats and birds in Illinois. Apply now to join our team of nationally recognized avian and bat biologists as a biological field technician!

Responsibilities:

• Conduct monitoring for bird and bat fatalities beneath operating wind turbines according to standard operating protocols.
• Precise and thorough data collection.
• Daily data review and electronic uploads.
• Daily communication and progress updates.
• Weekly job safety assessment meeting attendance.
• Maintain organized records and data logs.
• Adhere to all WEST and facility specific protocols.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred; however, undergraduates and enthusiastic workers with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
• Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners.
• The ability to follow protocol is essential.
• Familiarity with Midwest bird and bat species and/or the ability to use guides and keys for identification. Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job-related activities.
• Experience with GPS units, topographic maps, compasses, and other field equipment is preferred.
• Must be able to appear for work on time; follow instructions from project managers and field supervisors; interact effectively with coworkers and clients; maintain a positive attitude; and accept guidance and constructive criticism.
• The ability to accurately record and thoroughly review collected is essential.

Physical Requirements:

• Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys may require walking several miles per day and will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.
• Must be tolerant of biting or stinging insects.

After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  A valid driver’s license will be required.
