    Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size environmental consulting firm, is looking for 1 temporary full-time Biological Field Technician to help investigate the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at operational wind facilities, from late February 2023 through April 30, 2023. This position can be a great opportunity for local university students or seasoned field technicians living in or able to relocate to the area for the short duration of this position. Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.

     

    Key Details:

    • Compensation: $16.00 – $18.00 per hour, DOE
    • Mileage: Personal vehicle use reimbursed at $0.655/mile
    • Housing: Housing reimbursement up to $500/month may be provided to qualifying applicants
    • Start Date: February 27, 2023
    • End Date: April 30, 2023
    • Location: West Virginia (Mineral County). Daily commute from local towns: Cumberland MD, Frostburg MD, Oakland MD, Keyser WV, or Thomas-Davis WV.

     

    Job Summary:

    The biological field technician will conduct standardized searches beneath wind turbines to locate and document bird and bat fatalities. Successful candidates must be able to follow field and data collection protocols, work well both independently and with others, and be available to frequently correspond via text, call, and email with other team members. Training will be provided on bird/bat identification and field data collection. An average work week may include 30-40 hours, though there may be weeks requiring shorter or longer hours. Travel to and from field sites will be required; personal vehicle use will be reimbursed for mileage at the current federal standard rate. Successful candidates will work independently, gaining hands on field experience collecting scientific data used to assess the impacts of wind turbines on birds and bats in this unique region.     This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties which may be associated with this position. 

     

    Responsibilities include:

    • Conduct field work while adhering to WEST and client field safety requirements.
    • Conduct standardized fatality searches and follow electronic and paper data collection protocol.
    • Communicate with field coordinator and/or project manager on a regular basis

     

    Requirements/Skill preference:

    • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree preferred; however, undergraduates or other enthusiastic workers are also encouraged to apply
    • Experience with or ability to efficiently learn to collect data using a tablet, GPS unit, compass, and other field equipment (in person field training will be provided).
    • Experience using field guides/keys for identification is preferred, especially for bird and bat, but not required
    • Candidates must be organized, and able to collect and manage electronic data, including implementing quality control measures (e.g., reviewing and submitting data after fieldwork is completed for the day, sending survey status updates, answering questions)
    • Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners
    • The person filling this position is often required to work on site alone and be able to appear for work on time; field tasks may require periodic early morning and late evening start and stop times.

     

    Physical and Equipment Requirements:

    • Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will require walking for entire shifts in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme as well as safely opening and closing gates.
    • Technicians must have reliable transportation to and from the work sites and will be reimbursed mileage at the current federal standard rate. A GPS unit, compass, camera, and range finder will be provided by WEST, however, the technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable safety toed footwear (rugged hiking boots, etc.), and clothing.

    After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre- employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  A valid driver’s license will be required.
