Description
The McNeil Lab at the University of Kentucky and the Larkin Lab at Indiana University of Pennsylvania are seeking 1-2 avian banding assistants/general avian technicians to assist with various projects in Pennsylvania this summer. Banders will spend the first half of the field season (3-4 weeks) assisting with the capture, banding, and tagging (VHF and GPS) of Eastern Whip-poor-wills, Scarlet Tanagers, and Cerulean Warblers at various field sites across the state. After the conclusion of banding activities, technicians will then transition to helping with various other projects as needed, including standardized avian point-counts, vegetation surveys, Scarlet Tanager and Cerulean Warbler VHF telemetry, ARU recovery, and data entry. Other field-related tasks may be assigned as necessary. Shared housing and work vehicles will be provided. Expected start date is ~May 1st with an anticipated end date in mid-July, but there is some flexibility.
Qualifications
Experience with the setup and take down of mist nets, bird extraction, and bird banding are required for these positions. Experience with the deployment of VHF/geolocator/GPS tags via leg-loop harness is also strongly preferred. Other desirable qualifications include: knowledge of the identification of eastern birds by sight and sound; experience navigating by GPS and compass; comfortable working alone in remote areas with rugged terrain (i.e. mountainous ridges, wetlands, and dense thickets of thorny and woody vegetation), biting insects, and potentially hazardous animals (i.e. venomous snakes, black bears, and ticks); comfortable working and living with numerous other technicians; a positive attitude and willingness to learn new things. Experience with telemetry, vegetation surveys, and off-road driving are also pluses. This will be a rigorous position that requires early morning starts, long hours, and lots of flexibility, but it is highly rewarding and technicians will gain a diverse set of skills and experiences.
