Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy (RWC) is accepting applications for an aviculture internship for recent graduates in the field of wildlife management, natural resources, zoology or related course work.
Interns receive on-the-job training alongside our internationally known staff in all aspects of aviculture working with the Conservancy's large avian captive collection of comprised of approximately 400 birds representing over 80 species from all over the world including waterfowl, cranes, pheasants, raptors and wading birds.
In addition, interns will have the opportunity to participate in the Conservancy's environmental education programs under the supervision of the Conservancy’s Educator.
This internship position has a rolling enrollment and will be filled as soon as possible. The duration of the internship is six (6) months. Interns are provided with housing onsite and a monthly stipend ($500.00 monthly).
Internship responsibilities include:
· Feeding, maintenance, and care of the captive avian collection
· Cleaning enclosures and ponds
· Aviary maintenance including grounds and structures
· Assistance with bird capture
· Record keeping – medical and breeding (ZIMS)
· Interacting with RWC visitors and donors during public visitation, guided tours and special events
· Exposure to falconry
· Assisting our Educators at school, community events, distance learning and onsite programs
· Support fundraising initiatives including mailings and general event preparations
· Assist with marketing efforts (social media)
This is a demanding position that requires long hours and extended periods outside in adverse weather conditions. Applicants must be willing to put in the time and effort to complete projects as needed. Applicants must be willing to have a flexible schedule. A valid driver license is required.
· Graduate in the field of wildlife management, natural resources, zoology or related field
· Experience in animal care and/or labor-intensive position is highly desirable
· Exceptional attention to detail
· Capable of performing diverse tasks simultaneously
· Ability to problem solve in the field
· High level of professionalism
· Effective interpersonal skills and a cordial attitude
· Be able to lift at least 50 pounds, climb a ladder 20 feet or higher and perform overhead work
· Able to operate equipment such as riding mowers, weed whackers and basic power tools
Compensation: Interns receive housing onsite and a bi-weekly stipend of $250.00 ($500.00 per month).
