Birds Canada - Avian Survey Technician
Birds Canada invites applicants for seasonal fieldwork in Saskatchewan as Avian Survey Technicians; positions begin 17 May 2021 with work ending in early-August. Technicians will be responsible for conducting surveys to record all birds detected by sight and sound in either the prairie or boreal biomes. Field duties will involve navigating to places of work via vehicle and foot, hiking off trail, some canoeing (boreal crew), enduring bugs, conducting avian point counts, deploying bioacoustic recorders, and recording checklists for survey areas. Office tasks include data entry and maintenance of equipment. Successful applicants will have exceptional bird identification skills, a high proficiency in outdoor skills (e.g. navigation, map reading, common-sense), possess a strong work ethic, be meticulous in collecting and recording data, and able to maintain a positive attitude while working long, irregular hours (morning surveys can begin before 4 a.m.). The work is physically demanding and requires that candidates are in excellent physical condition; some off-trail travel during hours of darkness and intermittent periods spent working alone are required.
Successful candidates will demonstrate via examination, proficiency at identifying western birds by sight and sound, and they must hold a valid driver’s license and be eligible to work in Canada. Salary $3,100-$3,300/month (Cdn). Desirable aptitudes include: first aid, driving 4WD trucks, traveling by kayak or canoe, backcountry camping, interacting with rural landowners, and navigating using maps and GPS. Field accommodations will consist of a combination of camping, hotels, and/or cabins.
