    Job Description:

    Avian Field Technician needed to assist Ecostudies on various avian conservation projects in South Puget
    Sound including: 1) demographic monitoring of the federally threatened streaked horned lark, western
    bluebird, and Oregon vesper sparrow; 2) monitoring species abundance and habitat through bird survey
    on conservation and grazing lands, including for the slender-billed white-breasted nuthatch, 3)
    coordinating volunteers on the Puget Sound Shorebird Count. During the winter there will be
    substantial data entry and organizational duties. Primary field duties will include finding and monitoring
    nests, re-sighting color-banded birds, conducting behavioral observations, conducting bird surveys
    (point counts and line transects), sampling vegetation, and entering data. Technician may also assist
    with mist-netting and banding. Technician will clearly collect data, meticulously manage it, and be detail
    oriented in observation and documentation. The position will also support habitat restoration activities,
    which may include invasive plant control, woodland understory enhancement and controlled burning.

    Qualifications:

    Only open to U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident. Successful applicants should have a keen interest in avian research and conservation, demonstrate excellent communication skills, be able to work independently and in a team setting, and be comfortable working on an active military base.  The technician should be able to identify local grassland and oak bird species by sight and ear, or quickly learn.  Successful applicant will need to submit to a criminal background check.   

    Compensation: A taxable monthly stipend of $2,171.43 provided by Washington Service Corp. Upon successful completion of service, eligible members receive an educational award of $6,495.
