    Position Title: Avian Point Count Technician

    Job Summary

    Avian Point Count Technicians are needed to conduct tidal-marsh bird research within Massachusetts. Technicians will support a large-scale project called SHARP: Saltmarsh Habitat & Avian Research Program, which investigates the status and distribution of tidal-marsh birds along the northeastern US coast. Particular emphasis is placed on Saltmarsh Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, Willet and Clapper Rail. See www.tidalmarshbirds.org for more information on SHARP. Positions will begin early May 2022 and conclude late July - early August 2022 (~30 hrs/wk for 10 weeks).

    Responsibilities:   

    ·         Complete avian point count training with a SHARP specialist

    ·         Conduct passive and callback point count surveys for marsh birds in selected tidal marshes within Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod regions

    ·         Conduct saltmarsh vegetation surveys at each field location 

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience in wildlife biology, environmental science, or a related field

    A working knowledge of northeastern bird identification by sight and sound.

    ·         Ability to work long hours in remote marshes under harsh field conditions (biting insects, deep mud and heat). 

    Ability to navigate off-trail on rough terrain.

    ·         Ability to adjust to varying schedules throughout the field season.

    Travel within southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod and possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

    ·         Mass Audubon requires all employees to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. In addition, a successful completion of a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record is required.

     

    Strong candidates will also have a combination of the following:

    ·         Prior experience with point count and callback surveys

    ·         Experience identifying saltmarsh bird species

    ·         A general knowledge of marsh vegetation 

    ·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook).

     

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands listed are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.  While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to talk, hear, sit, stand, and walk over uneven terrain.  Occasionally the employee is required to bend/stoop, crawl/kneel, carry, reach, push/pull, and lift up to 40 lbs.  Employee is required to apply limited manual dexterity in combination with eye-hand coordination, such as basic keyboarding, basic hand tools and instruments, filing, operating office equipment, and operating a motor vehicle. Employee must have good vision to observe wildlife in the field and to read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes. Employee must have the ability to hear bird vocalizations in the field.  Occasionally the employee is required to review non-written materials for general observation purposes and for analytical, detailed purposes.  Occasionally it is necessary for the employee to differentiate between colors.  

    Work Environment

Frequent outdoor work with exposure to weather/temperature extremes and extended periods of traversing uneven terrain.  Work may require performing responsibilities on early mornings evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Tools and Equipment Used

    The employee is required to use a personal computer and general office equipment (e.g., telephone, calculator, adding machine, copier, facsimile, etc.). May require the use of two-way radios for communication with field staff. Requires a valid driver’s license.
