    Description:

    The McConnell Lab at Mississippi State University is seeking two qualified technicians to assist with graduate research focused on breeding birds in Mississippi longleaf pine forests from May 1st-July 1st.  Technicians will be responsible for territory mapping and surveying occupancy/abundance of Bachman’s sparrows and northern bobwhites at the Marion County State Wildlife Management Area near Columbia, MS. The primary goal of this project is to examine the effects of dormant and growing season fire on southeastern avian species of concern.

     

    Job duties include:

    1.)    Re-sighting and mapping locations of color-banded Bachman’s sparrows

    2.)    Conducting breeding productivity transects

    3.)    Surveying vegetation at re-sight locations

    4.)    Conducting point counts of Bachman’s sparrows and northern bobwhites (along with several other open pine avian species)

    5.)    Entering data in Microsoft Excel

     

    Preferred applicants:

    1.)    Hold or are currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology or a similar discipline

    2.)    Have experience confidently identifying southeastern birds by sight and sound

    3.)    Have experience re-sighting color-banded passerines

    4.)    Are capable of conducting field work in sometimes difficult conditions (i.e., heat/humidity, stinging/biting insects, venomous snakes, feral hogs, uneven terrain)

     

    Technician positions are 40 hours/week, weather permitting. 

    Housing will be provided at the Marion County WMA headquarters.  A vehicle will be provided for fieldwork.  Technicians will need to bring their own field gear (binoculars, sturdy boots, backpack, etc.).
