    Avian Field Technician- Woodpecker & Osprey

    Highly motivated individual with an interest in human-wildlife conflict mitigation to work from May to July 2020. Technician will assist two graduate students in a joint effort to contribute to mitigation plans for woodpeckers and osprey.  

    Expected duties include driving for long distances, hiking long distances with gear to sites when inaccessible from drivable roads and performing duties in typical southeastern summer conditions. Interacting with private landowners and power company employees is required. Site evaluation for woodpeckers includes using a peeper scope to assess damage in cavities, using physical attributes of cavities and audio lures to identify species, cataloging vegetation and other site level characteristics of the damaged poles, and possibly attempting to capture nesting woodpeckers. Osprey work will include the monitoring of nest sites with UAVs (drones), cataloging nest sites and their characteristics, behavioral observations of nesting osprey and capturing nesting osprey to install GPS units. Weekends may be required to work depending on weather.

    Qualifications: Applicants should have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and must be able to perform field work full time. Applicants must be able to hike, with up to 50 lbs. in gear, for long distances to sites if needed and be able to work efficiently in typical southeastern summer conditions. Previous experience working in data collection, bird identification, animal handling. An academic background in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science or a related field are preferred. Field work can be time consuming and at times unsuccessful in accessing the sites. A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and attention to details are necessary.

    Salary: $12.50/hour at 40 hours a week. Housing and transportation to work cannot be provided at this time. A work vehicle and hotels when travelling are included in position.
