Primary Function: Conduct basic and applied research in the area of Avian Ecology.
Job Description: The Avian Field Technician will assist with ongoing bird and plant-related research. Duties will include; conducting point counts for Illinois birds, using playback recordings to detect focal species, collecting environmental DNA samples, assisting in woodpecker and wetland bird capture and banding, entering data, and assisting with report preparation for the contracting agency.
Qualifications: College coursework in Ornithology, Conservation, Ecology, or related field. Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Conservation, Natural Resources, or related field is preferred. A minimum of one season of fieldwork is required as well as one or more years of experience identifying birds migrating along the Mississippi Flyway by sight, song, and call.
Will require working in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois working irregular hours and overnights. Must be able to hike over uneven terrain while wearing equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and have the ability to operate large pick-up trucks.
Wage: $14-16 per hour.
