    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking a field technician to assist with ongoing bird and plant-related research. Duties will include conducting point counts for Illinois birds, using playback recordings to detect focal species, nest searching and monitoring of focal species, assisting in wetland bird capture and banding, entering data, and assisting with report preparation for the contracting agency.  This position will be 40 hours per week and will either be based out of the Chicagoland area or Champaign, Illinois. Fieldwork will primarily take place in the greater Chicago region.  

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, natural resources, or related field. Must have a minimum of one seasons of fieldwork experience. One or more years of experience identifying birds migrating along the Mississippi Flyway by sight, song, or call. Field recordings will be provided for study before the start of the field season. Experience conducting point count surveys and playback surveys for wetland bird species, wetland bird nest searching and monitoring, capturing birds using mist-nets, conducting vegetation surveys, using GPS, navigating using maps, collecting, entering, and managing data, writing technical reports, and motivation and willingness to learn are all preferred. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required. Knowledge of bird identification for resident Illinois species and bird species migrating along the Mississippi flyway. Effective communication with supervisor and other scientists. Attention to detail. Ability to work independently and in groups. Sound judgement when working independently, and when interacting with members of the public, landowners, and Forest Preserve District staff.

                   

    Salary: $17 - $19.00 per hour, depending on experience

                                                   

    Available:  May - October 2023.
