    Dawn Fletcher
    • Employer: Great Basin Bird Observatory
      Location: Flagstaff, Arizona
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 04/01/2023
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Seeking one avian field technician to conduct point counts for all birds in remote pinyon-juniper landscapes of northern Arizona. Surveys use the IMBCR point count protocol, identifying and measuring distance to all birds detected and performing brief habitat assessments at each point. Shared housing in Flagstaff for days off will be provided; however, most of the season will be spent camping. Field vehicles are provided. Surveys are paired so that two technicians are as close together as possible on a daily basis; however, most work is done independently. GBBO policy requires all technicians to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or an approved exemption. The dates of this position are May 1 - June 14.

Qualifications Proven experience in backcountry navigation; experience operating 4wd vehicles; ability to hike in sometimes difficult conditions (e.g. dense vegetation, steep terrain); good communication skills with coworkers, landowners, and the public; ability and willingness to work independently for up to 10 days at a time; and good bird identification skills are essential. The most competitive applicants will have at least one field season of experience surveying passerines by sight and sound (preferably southwestern birds).
