Avian Ecology Intern

Tin Mountain Conservation Center is a non-profit environmental education and conservation  research organization in New Hampshire that promotes an appreciation of the natural environment among children, adults, and families through hands on programs in the schools, at camps, and in the community to demonstrate responsible stewardship of natural resources through land protection, research, and sustainable forestry, agriculture, and energy.

We are seeking one Avian Ecology Intern for the summer 2023 field season from early May through August, with the possibility of extension. The Avian Ecology Intern will contribute to Tin Mountain’s 10+ years of avian and forest ecology research.  Tin Mountain’s avian research program began in 2008 with surveys conducted to determine the long-term impact of sustainable forestry methods on avian communities. Since its inception, Tin Mountain has expanded its research program to include breeding season bird banding, a winter bird ecology component, and increased the number and scope of point count surveys. Internship duties will include:  conducting weekly avian point count surveys on properties we steward and on other conserved private land in the area, assisting with songbird banding activities and MAPS station operation, re-sighting previously color-banded species, and collecting associated forest habitat data.

The intern will work with volunteers and staff to collect, organize, and analyze data and report results.

The avian ecology internship will begin in early-May and run to late-August. Extending the position to a full year is a possibility pending funding and satisfactory job performance.

Compensation is $1,000/month. Shared housing is provided.

Interns must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed to ensure the safety of all staff and interns.

Qualified applicants will have:

An interest in avian ecology and forest management

Experience identifying northern New England bird species by sight and sound

A familiarity with or willingness to learn proper mist-netting and banding techniques

Data collection, organization, and management skills

Ability to work well in groups as well as independently in the field

Ability to work in challenging field conditions including hot summer weather, insects, and early mornings

Ability to navigate and hike through rough forested terrain

A willingness to contribute to reports and pursue independent research projects

Experience with GPS and mapping software such as ArcMap preferred but not required
