    FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANT needed 14 September 2020 through the end of February 2021 to assist with field work at the Avon Park Air Force Range in south‑central Florida. The position is part of Archbold Biological Station’s Avian Ecology Program under the direction of Dr. Reed Bowman.


    Primary duties include:

    ·       Habitat assessments for three focal species: Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Florida Scrub-Jays, and Florida Grasshopper Sparrows.

    ·       Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavity tree maintenance, including assisting with artificial cavity installation (involves tree climbing using sectional ladders up to 30 feet high)

    ·       Population monitoring of color-banded Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and Florida Scrub-jays

    ·       Data entry and maintaining data integrity in Microsoft Access database and ArcGIS


    Other duties may include assisting with trapping of adult Florida Scrub-Jays, assisting with Red-cockaded Woodpecker translocations, conducting Crested Caracara surveys, and routine equipment maintenance.



    ·       Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science, or a related field.

    ·       Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    ·       Excellent observation skills, attention to detail, legible note-taking, and the ability to maintain large databases with a high level of accuracy and integrity.

    ·       Ability to read color bands a must, and previous experience with bird behavior is essential.

    ·       Experience conducting vegetation surveys is a plus.

    ·       Familiarity with GPS, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Access is a plus.

    ·       Applicants should be highly motivated as field days often start before sunrise and require a tolerance for biting insects, high humidity, and heat.

    ·       Must be willing to work a non-regular schedule that may include weekend days.

    ·       Ability to drive 4WD vehicles in poor driving conditions (loose sand, mud holes, standing water).

    ·       Must be capable of working independently in remote areas of pine flatwoods and scrub with little direction.

    ·       Willingness to work on an active military base is essential.


    Salary is $11.33/hour plus free off-site housing (no pets, no smoking). Applicant must bring their own car to access off-site housing.


    Archbold Biological Station is a renowned research facility located in south-central Florida, and has been conducting endangered species monitoring at the Avon Park Air Force Range since 1993. Avon Park Air Force Range is a 106,000-acre military reserve that protects some of the best examples of native habitats in the region. Military training activity occurs daily and our monitoring protocols involve working around these training missions.
