    NRSI is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Avian Field Biologist with appropriate field skills and demonstrated experience (min. 1 year of professional experience) conducting avian surveys to join NRSI’s team.  This position is intended to be based out of a field office in the Parry Sound area (accommodations may be provided on an as-needed basis).  The contract will begin in April, with a flexible start date, continuing until approximately August 15, 2020.  Opportunities for contract extension and/or recurring contracts may be available.

     

    Specific Job Responsibilities:

    Implementation of avian monitoring programs, including breeding bird surveys;

    Assistance with other wildlife monitoring programs, specifically reptile surveys;

    Data entry and analysis;

    Highly motivated individual comfortable working independently;

    Willingness and the ability to conduct field work over potentially long hours, early mornings, late nights, occasional weekends, and a variety of weather and environmental conditions (insects, diverse terrain, seasonal temperatures, etc.).

     

    Qualifications Required:

    Excellent avian identification skills, both visual and auditory, for all major groups of bird species in Ontario.

    Experience leading breeding bird surveys in forested habitat within Ontario.

    ·         The ability to keep well-organized and detailed field notes.

    ·         The ability to work cooperatively as part of a field team as well as independently.

    ·         A willingness to work potentially long hours under variable field conditions (e.g. variable weather, mosquitoes/black flies).  Weekend work and occasional statutory holiday work may be required.  Physical fitness is an important component of this position and candidates should be comfortable walking for several hours/day and on uneven terrain.

    ·         Good work ethic, dependability, excellent communication, and a positive attitude.

     

    Duration: Approximately April 6 – August 15, 2020

    Location: Parry Sound Area, Ontario

    Other Requirements: A valid driver’s license is required, and Standard First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred.

    Salary: $18-$24 per hour (commensurate on experience)
