Responsibilities:
Assists the Natural Resource Officer with technical, administrative, enforcement, and laboring work in providing ecological and environmental protection of the local natural resources.
Coordinates and assists with symbolic fencing of appropriate nesting habitat for the Piping Plover, Least Tern and American Oystercatcher. Monitors shorebird nesting activities on Nauset Beach to include nest establishment, egg-laying, hatching, predation, chick rearing and fledging. Walks up to 6-7 miles daily in soft sand while carrying field equipment. Documents field observations for use in end of season reports and future management consideration. Records must be well organized and summarized into an annual report. Responsible for implementing and managing Habitat Conservation Plans.
Responsible for protecting all threatened and endangered species consistent with State and Federal Guidelines provided by Fish and Wildlife Service. Supports overall beach Over-Sand Vehicle operations, monitoring traffic and maintaining security in accordance with applicable Town regulations. Checks vehicles for valid OSV stickers. Communicates in the field with beach visitors to explain management objectives, actions and results.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age. High School Diploma required. Must possess a valid driver's license. Some college education in a related wildlife field preferred. Experience with shorebird monitoring preferred. Ability to work with the general public and local, state and federal agencies. Responds to inquiries and complaints with tact, discretion and professionalism. Familiarity with natural resources protection and off-road vehicle operation. Record keeping and word processing skills. Navigation skills and the ability to use G.P.S. Physical Requirements: Frequent physical effort required when performing duties. May be required to lift, move, and/or push objects which weigh sixty pounds or more as well as climb, stoop, crawl, and kneel for extended periods of time. Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather conditions. Must be able to walk long stretches in soft sand in all weather conditions.
Housing may be available.
