Berkshire Bird Observatory is looking for an Assistant Bird Bander to help us monitor migration in the beautiful Berkshires of western Massachusetts this coming Fall.
Where: Great Barrington, Massachusetts
When: August 14th through early November
Work Schedule: 6+ days/week, ~8 hours/day
Pay: $3,200/mo.
Housing: We will provide housing!
We are looking for someone with a serious love of birds and *passion* for banding to help us this Fall. As an assistant bander, you will be an integral part of a tight-knit team which includes another assistant bander, volunteers and the bander-in-charge. We band every day during migration in one of the most beautiful Appalachian valleys you will ever see! Our mornings start early: we open nets 15 min. before sunrise and close them after ~6 hours of banding. In addition to songbird banding, we will also launch our pilot season of Saw-whet Owl banding--how exciting! We would love to have help with this too but it is optional.
We're working out the exact details of housing, but you will be located somewhere in (or very near) Great Barrington--which the Smithsonian Magazine rated *The Best* small town in America in 2012! It's seriously awesome--lots of awesome restaurants, shops, entertainment etc. Plus the surrounding area (Berkshires) is considered a haven of culture and nature. It's my favorite place in all of North America--just saying. And in Fall, with the leaves... Incredible.
Qualifications:
As this is Fall migration monitoring and we anticipate high-volume days, we would like to hire someone with substantial banding experience. The ideal candidate would be a safe, conscientious and fast extractor who has seen volume and has at least one season of migration banding under their belt. NABC certification is a good thing too, but we know it's tough to get to those sessions which are only held once a year in random places... You'll also need to be able to move quickly and safely though mud and up and down hills. We're in New England, so you need to be able to handle ticks. We will consider candidates less experienced candidates (still need to have extracted hundreds of birds though) if they impress us in other ways. BBO values diversity and we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.
How to apply: Please send your cover letter, CV and three banding references to Ben Nickley (bnickley4@gmail.com). We will review applications in the order they are received and hire the first awesome candidate: don't wait for the deadline to apply--this is a great opportunity!
