    Description: $1,600/month

    The University of Rhode Island is seeking a highly-motivated research technician to assist on a graduate project investigating spatial movements and habitat use of American woodcock (adults and broods) in Rhode Island state management areas. Primary duties will include searching for nests and broods using pointing dogs, mist-netting, banding adults and broods, attaching radio-telemetry packages, tracking, and data entry. Technician will work 40 hours/week but schedule will be irregular especially during the nesting season. The position will run from 20 March-1 September 2021. Housing will be located in Kingston, RI and utilities will cost ca. $50/month.


    Must possess or be working toward a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife sciences, ecology, natural resources or closely related discipline. Prior field experience involving upland game birds preferred. Must be team-oriented (work among a small group of 4) but also capable of working alone in the field. Must possess good work ethic and be capable of working long days and late nights, especially during the early-spring mist-netting season. Public engagement is a major component of this work, the technician will work closely alongside volunteer dog handlers.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    ·         Ability to work a flexible schedule

    ·         Gamebird handling, banding, and VHF transmitter attachment experience

    ·         Experienced with radio-telemetry  

    ·         Ability to operate mist-nets and extract birds w/o supervision

    ·         Ability to work with and coordinate with volunteer dog handlers

    ·         Ability to navigate using GPS and compass

    ·         Vegetation sampling and ID experience

    ·         Close-attention to detail and legible note-taking

    ·         Good physical health and ability to hike in challenging terrain (brush, biting insects, hot/humid weather)

    ·         Positive attitude and sense of humor when conditions aren’t ideal

    ·         Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
