Postdoctoral Researcher at the Swiss Ornithological Institute

The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a private foundation for ornithology and bird protection. In Sempach, ornithological research and the promotion of the bird world are united under one roof. The Ornithological Institute employs around 160 people in all parts of the country.

The unit "Situation of the birds" is concerned with the state and trends of bird populations in Switzerland and beyond. For the new international project “Scenarios for Protecting European Avian Redistributions" (SPEAR), with funding from Biodiversa+ and the Swiss National Science Foundation, we are looking for a two-year
Post-doctoral researcher in ecological modelling (80 - 100%; m/f/d)

Your tasks
• Develop high resolution distribution and abundance models (SDMs) of species from priority habitats (e.g., mountains, threatened farmland, old-growth forest, etc.) at a European scale
• Collaborate with a large consortium of scientists to provide the outputs necessary for spatial conservation prioritization
• Lead in the publication of research

Requirements
• Experience with species distribution and abundance modelling
• A PhD in ecology or a related field
• Very good writing and communication skills in English
• A proven ability and interest in publishing in international, scientific, peer-reviewed journals
• Enthusiasm for collaborative work
• The ability to work independently
• Experience programming in R
• Experience leading peer-reviewed publications as the first author

Additional desired Qualifications:
• Experience in project management
• Experience with conservation prioritization software (e.g., Zonation)

What we offer
A two-year postdoctoral position with the salary according to the regulation of the Swiss Ornithological Institute. In addition, you can expect good opportunities for further training and exemplary social benefits. Starting date is 1 November 2023 or by agreement. Working place is Sempach, Switzerland. While some home office is permitted, a minimum of 3 days/week in the office is required.
