    Multiple postdoctoral positions are available at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. Postdocs will be working with Associate Professor Luke Gibson in the SUSTech Biodiversity Lab.

    We are an international team with expertise in biodiversity monitoring, ecological modelling, GIS and remote sensing. Our research is focused on deforestation, fragmentation, wildlife trade, green energy and bird migration, and is based in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Laos. Available research projects could include (1) Which species benefit from agricultural expansion, and how do these species affect fragmented forest ecosystems isolated within agricultural landscapes? (2) How does China;s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and associated infrastructure development (e.g., roads, railways, dams) affect biodiversity conservation or animal migration patterns? (3) How does the spread of invasive species affect predator communities in habitats where they have been introduced? (4) Which species in wildlife trade have expanded their ranges into the urban centers where they are traded, and how do these species affect local ecosystems where they have been introduced?

    Postdocs will be hired on a 2-year contract, starting at the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020. Salary is approximately 260,000 RMB (approximately 38,000 USD) per year. Each postdoc will be given 250,000 RMB (approximately 36,000 USD) to support his/her research activities. Each postdoc is expected to produce multiple high-impact publications during the contract.

    Postdocs will be living in Shenzhen, the first Special Economic Zone of China immediately across the border from Hong Kong which has been described as the Silicon Valley of China. The quiet and green campus of SUSTech is located in Tanglang, surrounded by fruit plantations, reservoirs, and forested hills. More information is available here: 

    Applicants must have:

    1. a PhD
    2. strong quantitative skills
    3. multiple publications in high-impact journals

    If you're considering applying from abroad, please beware of the continuing gross human rights violations the occur in China. The former president of Xinjiang University is likely facing the death penalty for nothing that resembles what e.g. Americans would call "due process." He was forcibly returned to the country while traveling with students to a conference.
