    JOB SUMMARY:

    *Desired position location is Madelia; however, open to considering other locations with the expectation to travel to Madelia as needed (estimated average once per week).*

    This position is one of two Research Scientist 2 positions within the MN DNR's Farmland Wildlife Populations and Research Group (FaWPRG) based in Madelia. In particular, the person hired for the Upland Game Project Leader position will:

    Design, execute, and report independent and original research on upland game (primarily ring-necked pheasants and gray partridge) and wild turkeys; provide new knowledge about these resources; develop and evaluate new methods and techniques for the advancement of upland game, wild turkey, and grassland habitat management; serve as a state expert on upland game and wild turkeys; and represent the Department in public meetings and disseminate advanced technical expertise to natural resource professional and the public. This individual will integrate scientific data and research findings; convey this knowledge to wildlife staff, peer committees, and other professionals and act as a key participant in the development, evaluation, and implementation of DNR wildlife management policies required to ensure the sustainability of wildlife resources in Minnesota. Other duties as assigned.

    This is a Ph.D. level position (M.S. required) with post-graduate research experience required. We are looking for someone with 1) a strong background in avian ecology with an emphasis in gallinaceous birds and/or grassland birds, 2) previous experience designing and conducting management-oriented research, 3) demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed articles, and 4) the skills and desire to work closely with Minnesota wildlife managers to answer relevant research questions.

    Research Scientist 2 positions perform advanced independent wildlife scientific research work and are responsible for initiating and completing research projects. They also review research activities in progress, correlate complex technical findings, interpret theories and reports, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and instruct lower level employees in research procedures.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Advanced degree in biology, wildlife management, or closely related area, AND
    • 1-3 years experience (1 year with Ph.D., 3 years with M.S.) as a research biologist including project design and analysis at the NR Specialist Senior Wildlife Research level or equivalent.
    • At least two (2) wildlife research articles (minimum 5-6 pages) in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Exceptional personal and written communication skills as well as oral presentation skills.
    • Knowledge of current wildlife research and management.
    • Analytic skills to conduct research and evaluate research work conducted by others.
    • Conflict resolution skills both internally (e.g., committee recommendations) and externally (e.g., participating in public meetings).
    • Management skills to effectively plan, budget, motivate, coordinate, supervise, and direct resources available to meet wildlife research and management needs.
    • Recognized ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships.
    • Capability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment including: trucks and trailers, capture equipment, and telemetry equipment.
    • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access) and knowledge of statistical software including Program R.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • PhD in wildlife ecology, preferably on gallinaceous birds and/or grassland birds. 
    • Extensive computer programming experience with R.
    • Proficiency in ArcGIS.
    • Extensive knowledge of current wildlife research and management in the Midwest, particularly as it relates to upland game birds, grassland birds, and U.S. Farm Bill programs (e.g. Conservation Reserve Program).
    • Experience modeling avian populations and understanding the outputs sufficient to make management recommendations.
    • Publication in the Wildlife Society Bulletin and/or the Journal of Wildlife Management.
    • Experience at the level of Research Scientist 2, or equivalent.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Occasionally lifting articles and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
