We are seeking one Wildlife Field Technician working as an avian and bat fatality monitor near Lexington, Oregon. Field work includes working on average 35 hours per week in spring, summer and fall seasons (early March-mid November) with occasional overtime. 

    The primary responsibilities of both positions are to implement a post-construction fatality monitoring program at an operational wind facility. The program is inclusive of fatality searches and carcass persistence trials, adhering to standardized protocols as trained, working with a field crew, and keeping detailed data.

     

    The field work begins March 2023 and continues through November 2023. Fatality monitoring applicants must be willing to commit to four full field days a week, including travel to and from the field location. The technicians will be responsible for their own housing throughout the study period. With possible shared housing available.

    Salary will be commensurate with experience and range from $20-$23/hour.

     

    Responsibilities:

    Candidates who have previous field experience with birds and/or bats are preferred.

    Candidates must be able to walk for extend periods of time and be able to effectively handle exposure to weather extremes and interaction with bird and bat carcasses.

    Field technicians may work independently or in small crews and must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with each other, offsite Tetra Tech supervisors, and site management teams.

    Technicians will be required to follow all wind facility-specific and Tetra Tech safety protocols and will be expected to provide their own suitable footwear (reinforced-toed hiking boots) and weather appropriate field gear.

     

    Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology or equivalent degree preferred.

    Must be able to identify eagles and other raptors.

    Good bird and/or bat identification skills for species in the region.

    Prior field experience.

    Individuals currently seeking degree and/or other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply.

    Must be able to work independently and with others, and interact positively with project managers, clients, and landowners.

    Experience with 4x4 vehicles, valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

    Skilled use of topographic maps, GPS units, and other field equipment.

    Must be able to follow instructions from manager and collect precise and thorough data.

    Must be able to work with electronic data collection protocols and data submission timing requirements; and

    Must be skilled with communication, have the ability to maintain positive attitude and to accept guidance and constructive criticism.

    Travel time to the field site will be compensated for up to 2 hours roundtrip.

    Candidates residing within this distance are preferred, but not required.

    The field study site is located near Lexington, Oregon, south of Hermiston and Pendleton.

    A Pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations is required.

    Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

     

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

    Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels.

    Availability to work extended field rotations (sometimes 10-12 days at a time).

     

    Compensation:

    Salary commensurate with experience.

    Salary Range: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
