    Description

    This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to conservation of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (RCW) in South Carolina. The purpose of this position is to assist in the implementation of RCW monitoring and recovery efforts on private lands and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) properties. Position will consist of nesting season monitoring and year-round maintenance of SCDNR properties and implementation of the Safe Harbor program, including site visits, providing technical guidance to landowners, enrollment of new properties and agreement transfers.

     

    Red-cockaded Woodpecker Monitoring

    ·         Assist in the design and implementation of RCW monitoring and recovery projects

    ·         Assess compartment level and stand level management needs

    ·         Assist with monitoring nest productivity, banding of juvenile and adult birds, conduct annual census and translocations when and where necessary.

    ·         Complete cavity tree surveys and maintain artificial cavities as necessary.

     

    Safe Harbor

    ·         Review requests from landowners for enrollment in the Safe Harbor program

    ·         Conduct site visits to potential enrollee properties to assess habitat and discuss management

    ·         Conduct site visits to enrolled properties to assess compliance with terms of agreement

    ·         Provide technical support to landowners

    ·         Execute associated paperwork

     

     

    Minimum and Additional Requirements

    A master's degree in biology, chemistry, or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    ·         Knowledge of Red-cockaded woodpecker biology and management

    ·         Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulatory procedures pertaining to RCW recovery and management

    ·         Familiarity with longleaf pine ecosystem and general southeast forest management practices

    ·         Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with peers and landowners on technical and non-technical subjects

    ·         Ability to work with specialized equipment including climbing harness and Swedish ladders, chain saws, off-road vehicles

    ·         Ability to endure long hours in harsh environmental conditions including extreme heat and exposure to insects

    ·         Familiarity with bird identification and ecology, qualified in bird-banding and a working knowledge of SC geography and natural history.

    ·         Must be willing to work non-standard hours with frequent, sometimes overnight, travel.

    ·         Demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

    ·         Must be physically able to climb up to 40 ft, lift and carry 40 lbs. while walking up to 4 miles carrying field supplies and day pack.

     

    Salary: $39,190
