    Over the past 49 years, The International Crane Foundation (ICF) has grown from the dream of two college students to a world-renowned conservation effort to save the world’s cranes and the flyways and habitats they frequent.  We are looking for a dedicated individual who can manage the everchanging needs of our captive flock. Our flock of around 100 birds includes all 15 species of the world’s cranes.

Our campus is located on 200+ acres of rolling prairies with trails. ICF operates a zoo that features all 15 of the world’s cranes.  The hourly pay is between $19.50 and $21.00, plus a nice benefit package. You will play a critical role in our work with endangered cranes.  

     

    Position Summary:

    The Veterinary Technician/Registrar supports the mission of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) by performing a variety of animal health care duties to assist the Director of Conservation Medicine and participates in veterinary support for endangered species reintroductions and research projects. This position also provides registrar support to the animal care and veterinary departments through coordination of animal transfers, permitting, supply purchase, and animal record data entry.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    ·       Coordinate identification of health issues and crane examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments with the aviculture staff and veterinarian.

    ·       Prepare treatment room or medical equipment/supplies for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.

    ·       Administer injections, perform venipuncture, apply wound dressings, and perform other therapeutic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian.

    ·       Perform diagnostic sample analysis, coordinate submissions, and maintain in-house laboratory.

    ·       Input and help manage health and husbandry data into the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS)  database.

    ·       Apply for and maintain required state and federal permits including annual reporting for the captive crane collection.
     

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

    ·       Prepare patients, medications, and equipment for surgery, prepares and monitors anesthesia procedures, and assist the veterinarian during surgical procedures.

    ·       Assist with the design, revision, and implementation of disease control programs and protocols.

    ·       Organize and coordinate the annual captive flock health check and other components of the preventative medicine program.

    ·       Oversee transportation of patients to the UW-School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and and/or participate in medical and surgical procedures with SVM staff.

    ·       Assist in keeping veterinary facilities, supplies, and equipment clean, well-stocked, and in working order.

    ·       Maintain genetic and serum biobank records, controlled drug tracking, and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for the department.

    ·       Assist with implementation of the nutrition and food Quality Assurance/Quality Control program, including submitting food orders.

    ·       Contribute to publications, presentations, and outreach efforts sharing crane health program findings.

    ·       Assist with mentoring and training of veterinary students and post-graduate resident trainees.

    ·       Coordinate bird transfers between zoological facilities including travel arrangements, permitting, preparation of health documents, and associated records for shipments.

    ·       Monitor legislation pertaining to captive wildlife management and transportation rules and regulations to ensure compliance.

    ·       Assist with training on data entry in ZIMS database to ensure records are complete, accurate, and timely.

    ·       Participate in flock husbandry care and management as needed.
     

    Qualifications Required:

    ·       Associate Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited veterinary technology program.

    ·       Successful passage of Veterinary Technician National Examination and a Wisconsin State Veterinary Technician License or within six months of obtaining.

    ·       Two years’ experience with caring for the health of non-domestic animals.

    ·       Knowledge of ZIMS or related recordkeeping software.

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    ·                 Experience working with captive birds.

    ·                 Experience in a zoo or an equivalent captive wildlife institution.

    ·       Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) .

    ·       Good organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work and to work with others to meet designated deadlines and desired results.

    ·       Ability to identify problems; collect, organize, and analyze information, and make appropriate decisions or recommendations to resolve problems.

    ·       Work as a constructive member of a team, including the free sharing of information and technical expertise as needed.

    ·       Quickly, effectively, and continually adapt to changes in work environment and duties, processes, and technologies.

    ·       Ability to work around birds in a calm manner.
     

    Physical Abilities and Work Environment:

    The physical abilities and work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Occasional travel may be required, primarily in the United States.
     

    ·       Daily use of a computer  

    ·       Ability to communicate with fellow staff and donors. Communication will include both one on one communication, small, and large group communication.

    ·       This position requires the ability to safely handle and restrain large, powerful birds.

    ·       Required to assume multiple positions when caring for the cranes and their enclosures including reaching balancing, crouching, and kneeling.

    ·       Occasionally required to ascend and descend stairs and ladders.

    ·       Occasionally exposed to high strength disinfectants, and to heavy dust loads (appropriate PPE provided).

    ·       Frequently moves up to 50 lbs.; occasionally moves 75 lbs. with assistance.

    ·       Daily work outdoors under all weather conditions found in Wisconsin.
