    Job Description:

    NJ Audubon’s mission is focused on fostering environmental awareness and a conservation ethic among NJ's citizens; protecting NJ's birds, mammals, other animals, and plants, especially endangered and threatened species; and promoting the conservation of NJ's valuable natural habitats. Towards this end, NJ Audubon’s Stewardship Department implements projects and programs that are central to achieving this mission. With staff based in key locations in northern and southern New Jersey and engaged statewide, the Stewardship Department is working with public and private landowners, state and local government and private industry to manage habitat and conserve wildlife resources.

    The Stewardship Technician will work collaboratively with New Jersey Audubon staff and partners (including USDA-NRCs, USFWS, NJDFW), and in consultation with the Stewardship Project Director-North, to implement on-the-ground conservation projects for both public and private landowners in New Jersey. The position’s primary responsibilities will include implementation of a wide range of habitat stewardship and restoration projects, including coordinate and manage conservation and restoration projects, many of which will be associated with the Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) and USDA Conservation programs connected with the Working Lands for Wildlife Program for American Black Duck, Northern Bobwhite, Bog Turtle and Golden-winged Warbler. These projects include invasive species vegetation control, creation of native grasslands and riparian buffers, wetland restoration, forest stewardship activities and promotion of agriculture, forestry and conservation Best Management Practices that reduce ecological impacts or provide ecological benefits.

    The Stewardship Technician will advise landowners participating in these initiatives with habitat management practices as well as assisting the Project Director with conservation plan development, coordination, technical support, and field assessment and monitoring. Other responsibilities will include coordinating volunteers as necessary to meet program goals; development and delivery of external communications including but not limited to presentations, press releases, and other spoken and written content; interacting with various partners (public, private and governmental) to promote effective, active conservation management actions associated with critical habitats.


    Major Responsibilities:

    -  Conducts site visits and, in consultation with the Project Director, implements specific field-based projects. Help provide oversight and assist with project management for implementation of specific field-based projects

    -  Initiates and follows through on landowner outreach efforts and works with a variety of landowners and agricultural producers to enhance habitat on a wide range of properties

    -  Implements habitat restoration projects on private and public lands through NJ Audubon associated initiatives

    -  Implements habitat restoration projects on agricultural land in Northern New Jersey

    -  Conducts land management tasks to meet project requirements, including, but not limited to, herbicide application, tree and shrub planting, grassland maintenance, tree thinning, wetland restoration, wildlife habitat projects, and prescribed burning projects

    -  Develop conservation and/or habitat management plans both independently and in cooperation with Project Director

    -  Aid landowners in the development of project proposals for federal funding

    -  Deliver federal and state conservation incentive programs through landowner contacts

    -  Facilitate community-based conservation through the development and distribution of education materials and press articles, as well as through creation of web content and social media postings

    -  Organizes and conducts workshops for stakeholders

    -  Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers to act as stewards of natural resources through data submission or participation in community restoration and stewardship events

    -  Works with the Stewardship Project Director and other staff to identify funding sources and prepare project reports and proposals

    -  Identify and explore opportunities to expand New Jersey Audubon conservation programs

    -  Maintain key relationships with partners, funders, donors and other contacts as well as completing other tasks as requested

    -  Participates with other mission area staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations


    -  B.S, B.A. or B.T. in wildlife management, natural resources or related field with two years of experience including an emphasis in land management and habitat restoration and/or conservation planning

    -  Experience developing and implementing restoration projects (experience and/or familiarity with USDA-NRCS conservation programs and practices is very beneficial)

    -  Fundraising or grant writing experience is beneficial

    -  Familiarity with local flora, fauna, and characteristic ecosystems of New Jersey

    -  Familiarity with or ability to safely use standard field equipment such as a GPS, compass, and field guides, and experience with or ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment, including backpack sprayers, planting bars, brush cutters, and power tools

    -  Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and ArcGIS) to fulfill the job requirements

    -  Excellent oral and written skills with good social media skills

    -  Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback

    -  Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with staff and other organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude

    -  Punctual with excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines

    -  Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality

    -  Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed

    -  Willingness to work irregular hours under sometimes difficult field conditions to meet special needs of the department and the organization

    -  Must be able to perform field work under all types of adverse weather conditions, able to walk on uneven surfaces and in rough terrain carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs

    -  Must be willing to travel to different locations in New Jersey as required. This requires a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license
