    Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST) is a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada. We are looking for an energetic and experienced Senior Wildlife Biologist.

    Position Type: Permanent / Full-time
    Location: Calgary, AB (Calgary preferred, other locations may be considered)

    Job Description:
    The successful candidate will be responsible for helping coordinate and manage wildlife studies, impact analyses, and conservation plan preparation for development projects throughout Canada.

    • Work individually, as well as with a team of natural resource specialists, scientists, and biometricians
    • Design and propose biological field and desktop studies to meet scientific objectives
    • Analyze potential project impacts and develop conservation plans to avoid, minimize, or mitigate those impacts
    • Complete and direct various project management and support tasks related to regulatory, permitting, and wildlife requirements
    • Supervise, direct, and coordinate field studies
    • Conduct/assist with day-to-day administration and management of projects
    • Train field technicians
    • Setup field studies
    • Prepare reports and/or plans
    • Prepare proposals
    • Provide quality assurance of data
    • Direct environmental technical aspects of multiple small to large-scale planning projects and teams
    • Coordinate with local/provincial/federal agencies, First Nations, and the public in support of client-directed project work
    • Conduct site visits and fieldwork, as necessary
    • Foster current business relationships and actively promote new business development efforts
    • Capitalize on existing client relationships to expand WEST’s profile and market share
    • Promote WEST’s core values of quality client service and a collaborative team approach while maintaining a positive and respectful work atmosphere

    Job Requirements

    • Legally allowed to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident, or have an existing VISA with no work restrictions). Please note: US citizens require a
    • Canadian work visa to work in Canada
    • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in environmental science/planning, natural resource science, ecology, or related field
    • Minimum of 10 years of applicable experience, including wildlife biology, environmental consulting, and/or project management in various sectors
    • Professional Biologist (P. Biol.) status with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB) or eligible
    • Experience with federal, provincial, and municipal environmental permitting, and regulatory requirements
    • Previous experience in environmental consulting is strongly desired, though alternative professional experience that includes scientific project management, budgeting, proposal writing and scientific report writing will be considered
    • Experience and/or aptitude for completing business development
    • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
    • Strong writing skills, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and accurately report scientific methods and results of field studies
    • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent time management, project management, and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines
    • Ability to follow instructions from managers and accept guidance and constructive assessment
    • Travel and overnight stays


    Successful candidates must be able to provide a driver’s abstract that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. Successful candidates must also be able to pass periodic drug and alcohol test that meets the minimum criteria of WEST and our clients. Candidates must be capable of adhering to all health and safety requirements, outlined by WEST and our clients, for the duration of their employment.
