    Brief Description of the Duties (as found on the USA Jobs listing)

    As a Biologist Senior Forensic Scientist - Ornithologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

    • Serves as primary investigator to address research problems of fundamental interest and extraordinary difficulty that influences the activities of other scientists in Government, academic institutions, private industry, and other international organizations.
    • Addresses complex research topics that often require exploration of novel techniques and state of the art technologies, and may require unconventional or novel designs, often with an interdisciplinary approach.
    • Serves as the lead on research to support the wildlife forensic program. Activities include study design, collection, and evaluation of morphological population data; statistical analysis, including data processing, assessing data quality; and processing data for use in validation experiments, further analyses, and scientific presentations and publications.
    • Independently conducts forensic examinations of highly complex and difficult evidence items utilizing judgment in improving upon existing methods and procedures and developing novel analytical methods such that they apply to nonstandard items.
    • Provides expert technical assistance to law enforcement staff as needed for identification of wildlife parts and products in the form of photographic identification or physical identification.
    • Provide expert advice and technical assistance to other professionals, agencies, tribal groups, and educational institutions on analytical techniques and applied research accomplishments across a variety of disciplines.
    • Assists staff with arranging collections of fish and wildlife tissues to augment the forensic tissue and reference collection.
