The Wetlands Institute is seeking qualified applicants for an exempt full-time position in our Research and Conservation Department. The Wetlands Institute is a non-profit organization located in Stone Harbor, NJ on the Cape May Peninsula of southern New Jersey. Situated on 6,000 acres of coastal salt marsh and in close proximity to Atlantic coast barrier island and Delaware Bay beaches, The Wetlands Institute promotes research, conservation, and education through a variety of field studies, community-engagement projects, and educational programs.

The main responsibilities of this position are to direct, coordinate, and conduct approved research projects and conservation programs in accordance with the Institute’s goals and mission. Experience and a strong knowledge base in coastal and wetlands ecosystems is desired, with specific interest and experience in the study of coastal birds. Focal projects will include monitoring beach- and marsh-nesting bird species and tidal marshes. This position offers the opportunity to engage in a diversity of activities, including grant-funded research and monitoring, community-based conservation programs, and program and project development. These duties will be performed in close coordination with Institute staff, partners, and volunteers.

    Primary responsibilities include:

    •                      Contribute to success of ongoing research and conservation projects through project management, data collection and analysis, and reporting.

    •                      Conduct basic and applied research to increase understanding of the functions of the salt marsh, barrier beaches, the Delaware Bay, and associated environments. Research activities include collecting, compiling, and analyzing pertinent data (e.g. basic life history metrics, population status and trends, habitat characteristics) in an effort to better understand the effects of restoration activities and/or ecosystem change on coastal birds and other organisms and tidal marshes.

    •                      Assist with the development of new research and conservation projects.

    •                      Write grant proposals, permit applications and reports, project reports, and manuscripts.

    •                      Participate in fundraising programs and initiatives to support research, conservation, and other Wetlands Institute programs.

    •                      Organize and analyze scientific data for presentation and scientific publication.

    •                      Perform various administrative and maintenance duties required for Department operations, including maintaining equipment and facilities to ensure proper and safe operations.

    •                      Assist with supervision, scheduling, and coordination of projects with research interns, volunteers, staff, and partners.

    Competitive candidates will have:

    •                      M.S. or Ph.D. in biology, ecology, conservation biology, or related field and 2-3 years of relevant job experience.

    •                      Successfully managed research and/or conservation projects, including data collection, management, and quality control, oversight of staff and/or volunteers, and the coordination of logistics.

    •                      Proficiency in statistical analysis, including spatial analysis.

    •                      Training and experience capturing, handling, and banding birds.

    •                      Solid communication skills for professional and informal audiences, and scientific writing and presentation experience.

    •                      Boat operation experience is preferred but not required; duties will include operating small motorized vessels.

Position duties are conducted in the office, in the laboratory, and in the field and include early morning, night, holiday, and weekend hours. Applicants should be willing to tolerate exposure to variable and sometimes adverse weather and environmental conditions (wind, heat, cold, mud, rain, biting insects, poison ivy).

Start date is flexible but candidates should be available in early 2019. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a competitive benefits package. A valid driver’s license and personal transportation is required. Successful candidate will be required to undergo a limited criminal background screening.

Please submit: 1) cover letter detailing interest, qualifications, and availability for position, 2) CV, 3) contact information for three professional references to Lisa Ferguson: lferguson@wetlandsinstitute.org. Please include “Research Scientist” in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed as received; deadline for submitting application materials is February 4, 2019.
