    Bird Conservancy of the Rockies is a 501-c(3) non-profit headquartered at the Environmental Learning Center at Barr Lake State Park with a satellite office in Fort Collins and fieldwork outposts in the Great Plains Region. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies conserves birds and their habitats through an integrated approach of Science, Education, and Stewardship. Our work radiates from the Rockies to the Great Plains, Mexico and beyond.  


    Position(s) Overview: 

    Bird Conservancy of the Rockies is hiring a dynamic scientist with a proven track record of being a leader in the field of avian ecology and conservation delivery. The Research Director will oversee Bird Conservancy’s major science initiatives (e.g., full-annual cycle grassland bird research, western Motus network, coordinated bird monitoring, demographic modeling and analysis). Ideal applicants will have a strong background in study design, demographic modeling and analysis of large “count” datasets, and application of novel technological approaches. Additional desired qualification include: a track record of extramural (federal and non-federal) grant funding, strong record of peer-reviewed publications, and the ability to translate science into conservation delivery. The Research Director will supervise 4 full time staff while working collaboratively with our Director of Science Operations and Chief Conservation Scientist to oversee and grow our integrative research program. The incumbent will also be expected to work closely with our Stewardship and Education Directors on programmatic integration. The Research Director will be based in Bird Conservancy’s Fort Collins office; however, flex scheduling and telework can be accommodated with supervisor approval.


    Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    ·       Provide strategic leadership and oversight of research program areas (Full-Annual Cycle, Motus, Coordinated Bird Monitoring, Demographic Modeling and Analysis).

    ·       Provide “life-cycle” oversight of research projects including design, analysis, publication and dissemination/conservation delivery.

    ·       Lead and mentor staff on the authorship of peer-reviewed publications and reports for funders ensuring results are translated and shared with key audiences to maximize conservation delivery.

    ·       Collaborate with Chief Conservation Scientist (CCS) to secure funding and identify opportunities for strategic science program growth.  

    ·       Collaborate with internal and external scientists and partners to further the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.


    Other Duties: 

    ·       Collaborate with CCS, Education, and Stewardship Directors to integrate programs and advance mission of conserving birds and their habitats.

    ·       Provide financial management and oversight for Science programs in coordination with the Director of Science Operations and the Senior Program Manager.

    ·       Serve on relevant national and regional boards to represent bird conservation as identified by the CCS.

    ·       Other duties as assigned


    Knowledge, Skills and Experience required (unless otherwise noted):

    ·       Doctoral degree or commensurate experience in conservation related field preferably Avian Ecology or Conservation Biology 

    ·       Strategic leadership skills and progressive management experience 

    ·       Detailed knowledge of avian research techniques (study design, analysis and novel technological approaches)

    ·       Track record of peer-reviewed publications and technical reports 

    ·       Experience translating science into conservation and management 

    ·       Demonstrated record of successful grant writing 

    ·       Exposure to human and wildlife conservation issues in the west

    ·       Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including excellent interpersonal skills 

    ·       Strong partnership and team building skills

    ·       Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines

    ·       Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, overnights 

    ·       Intermediate Spanish language skills

    ·       Willingness to travel locally, regionally and internationally

    ·       Proficient in Microsoft Office, Program R and ArcGIS

    ·       May include lifting up to thirty (30) pounds of project gear on an infrequent basis- proper lifting techniques required

    ·       Able to stand, walk, and hike for extended periods of time outside in all-weather as needed for research oversight
