    JOB SUMMARY
    The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is seeking qualified candidates for a Project Biologist/Range Specialist to implement conservation projects for the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture (OPJV) partners at the regional and local level. This is accomplished by working in partnership with other NWTF field staff, state and federal agencies, other NGO partners, and corporate partners to accomplish on-the-ground work with private landowners (farmers and ranchers). This position's work should result in improved investing of NWTF and OPJV partner funds including quality project selection and locating matching funds.
    POSITION LOCATION
    Location will be in the USDA-NRCS Field Office in Ardmore, Oklahoma close by where the OPJV Northern Conservation Delivery Specialist is stationed. For more information on the Oaks & Prairies Joint Venture, see http://www.opjv.org.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
    1) Administers regional habitat programs (e.g., GRIP and RCPP) in primarily Oklahoma and Texas, as needed. Provides input on program guidelines and monitors success of program. (70%)
    2) Attends all OPJV Management Board and Local Initiative Team meetings, state chapter Board of Directors meetings, and other meetings as needed. (10%)
    3) Identifies outside funding sources such as grants and implements projects using awarded funds, including state and federal grants. (5%)
    4) Assists with development of NWTF and partner grassland bird conservation programs and plans. (5%)
    5) Provides news and information to NWTF and other OPJV partners Communications Departments regarding conservation projects. Also provides technical information about wild turkey and grassland bird biology and management to agencies and
    members (i.e., information requests). Contributes to NWTF and partner state newsletters and websites. (10%)
    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
    This position will report to an NWTF District Biologist and an OPJV Conservation Delivery Specialist, and will work as a part of a cross-organization team of staff from OPJV partner organizations to achieve shared objectives. Day-to-day coordination with partner staff will be required for success of the project biologist. Position may have contractors working under their observation/oversight on specific project activities and will involve working with private landowners.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Position requires:
    Experience in bird/wildlife ecology and conducting accepted habitat management practices within grassland ecosystems , i.e. Rx burning, brush management, range planting, grazing systems
    A Bachelor's degree or higher in Wildlife Biology, Range Management or a closely related degree plus 2 years of relevant experience and/or Master's degree
    A valid Driver's License
    Employee to possess a solid working knowledge of grassland ecosystems
    The ability to work independently without close NWTF supervision and as a part of a cross-organizational team to determine work priorities daily, weekly and monthly to maximize time efficiency is required
    Employee to have strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
    Employee to possess basic computer skills such as e-mail, Word, Excel, Microsoft office, and Power Point Working knowledge of wildlife programs provided by federal Farm Bill (especially EQIP, with understanding of WRP, CRP, SAFE, WHIP, CSP, etc.), other state, & local conservation programs
    Ability to navigate in remote and rural areas and communicate with agency personnel, contractors, and workers in the field
    Being a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and guidance
    Excellent organizational skills, and ability to work well as a team member
    A willingness to travel including some overnight stays of 3 to 7 nights
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    One (1) or more years of directly applicable experience as a biologist/range specialist
    Experience in managing multiple projects in diverse locations
    Experience working with state and federal agencies and diverse stakeholders
    Experience working with landowners and agricultural producers Direct experience with implementing Farm Bill (EQIP, WRP, CRP, SAFE, WHIP, CSP, etc.), other state, & local conservation programs in an agricultural landscape
    PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
    Applicant must be able and willing to:
    Work alone in a diverse range of climatic and topographic conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures, biting insects, and snakes, possibly in remote areas with limited access and amenities and other extreme conditions as warranted
    Walk several miles per day in the conditions described above and drive and/or ride long distances frequently.
