POSITION TITLE: Policy Analyst, Private Lands

REPORTS TO: Senior Policy Analyst, Private Lands

SALARY: Up to $68,000 annually

This professional-level position will contribute to Defenders of Wildlife’s strategic goal of securing new wildlife conservation initiatives, policies, and laws. This goal is met through helping develop and advocate for national policies to promote wildlife conservation on private lands, including protection and restoration of habitat on private lands, securing adequate funding for wildlife conservation on private lands, and expanding conservation partnerships with private landowners, land trusts and other stakeholders.
The Policy Analyst will collaborate with Defenders’ Field Conservation, Center for Conservation Innovation (CCI), Government Relations, Conservation Law, Communications, and Development Departments to conduct policy research and analysis and develop information, partnerships, and programs to further science-based wildlife conservation on private land nationwide.
· Research and analyze federal and selected state law, regulations, and policies, administrative initiatives, draft regulations, and federal projects related to wildlife conservation on private lands.
· Prepare summaries, factsheets, technical comments, testimony, and other materials explaining policies and proposals and Defenders’ position on them.
· In coordination with Government Relations staff, help educate congressional offices on private lands conservation policy issues. Assist in identifying legislative champions and coordinating messaging and outreach to congressional offices to advance a progressive conservation agenda.
Cultivate, maintain, and grow positive working relationships with congressional staff, federal agency officials, state governments, landowner organizations, land trusts, and other partners to achieve shared conservation goals.
Attend local, regional, or national meetings related to private lands and state wildlife conservation policy.
Research, write, and/or edit Defenders reports, webpages, blogs, social media, and other publications.
Represent Defenders in public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and in general communication with public officials, legislators, the media, Defenders’ membership, the donor community, and the general public to further Defenders’ objectives.
Work with Development staff to raise operating funds for Defenders’ Landscape Conservation department.
Supervise interns or student researchers.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
· This role may require occasional domestic travel.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed below.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental/public policy, natural resources management, agricultural economics, conservation biology, or related discipline.
Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in at least one of the following areas:
· private lands policy, especially with an emphasis on wildlife or ecosystems;
· developing, advocating for and/or implementing federal, state and/or privately administered programs to conserve biodiversity;
· engaging in land management planning or natural resources management; or
· organizing private lands campaigns for non-profit organizations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Strong research and data analysis skills, including ability to gather information from multiple sources and produce high quality work products in a consistent, efficient and timely manner
· Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture
· Ability to work independently as needed, problem solve, and exercise sound decision-making skills in fluid environments to meet job expectations and achieve goals in an accurate and timely manner. Ability to effectively navigate through change and maintain flexibility.
· Ability to represent Defenders to external entities and the public in a professional manner while exercising tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
· Requires high level of computer literacy with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet applications.
· Personal interest and commitment to conservation
· Fluency in additional languages preferred, especially Spanish
Work Expectations and Environment:
General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so. This role may require occasional travel.
