Plan, lead and deliver a game-changing approach to control of invasive species to protect southern tokoeka kiwi in New Zealand's largest national park. Spring boarding off new innovations, new technologies and new thinking (as part of the wider Predator Free NZ programme) this role focusses on delivering sustained periods of low predator abundance through isolated peninsulas in western Fiordland.
Driven by the ambitious Save Our Iconic Kiwi programme, this role has significant research focus; the successful applicant will connect with both internal and external science partners to lead a research-by-management trial for the protection of southern Fiordland tokoeka kiwi. This includes strong elements of operational planning, project design, contract management and delivery, threatened species fieldwork, data analysis and reporting results.
The successful candidate will be operationally strong, with the ability to resolve complex challenges associated with remote delivery of predator control. With a sustained focus on protecting indigenous species in the places they occur, this role is a great opportunity to apply predator free learnings directly to conservation of native fauna.
This role joins DOC's largest team of biodiversity staff, and can be based at either the Te Anau or Invercargill offices, adjacent to Fiordland National Park. The successful applicant will have the support of experienced local staff, the national predator control planning team, and leading DOC scientists involved in kiwi and animal threats work.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in the planning and delivery of large-scale animal pest operations, including complex problem solving.
- The ability to think strategically and act operationally – proven ability to implement new ideas
- Practical management and monitoring of animal populations - experience with camera trapping an advantage
- Excellent project management skills and experience
- A formal qualification, or equivalent relevant experience related to natural heritage (flora, fauna or ecosystems) or conservation management.
- Experience and a positive attitude in working with treaty partners and stakeholders
- Strong financial management ability
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and networking skills
