FIELD CREW LEADERS (2) - needed for 12 months each to assist in an ongoing study of the endangered Mariana Crow on the island of Rota, Northern Mariana Islands. Start dates are late April and late June 2022. Responsibilities will include nest searching and monitoring, conducting radio-telemetry and behavioral observations, resighting color banded birds (90% of population is color banded), and assisting with trapping/capture of fledgling and adult crows. Work occurs in remote areas of the island and often involves strenuous hiking over steep, uneven terrain (including navigating cliffs) and long field days in tropical heat and humidity. A thorny understory, mosquitoes, spiders and stinging wasps are regular annoyances (those with severe allergies to bees or wasps should not apply). Amazing views and island-endemic birds are a regular benefit. After a period of training, daily work is done alone, out of cell phone or radio contact. The schedule can be irregular with frequent pre-dawn excursions, and semi-regular evening/night work. Applicants must have a high level of physical fitness and cultural sensitivity. In addition to daily field work, after a period of training, crew leaders will be responsible for assisting with daily scheduling, reporting, data management, and other administrative tasks. Applicants must have previous experience with avian field work. Experience in a leadership role on a field crew is also required. Benefits include round-trip airfare to Rota (reimbursed), housing, shared vehicles, and $1800-2300/mo. DOE. At the end of the 12-month period, there may be an opportunity to extend the period of employment and gain additional responsibilities within the project.

To apply, e-mail a cover letter, résumé, and contact information for 3 references to Sarah Faegre (sfaegre@gmail.com) using the subject line “2022 Mariana Crow Crew Leader”. Your cover letter must clearly indicate your qualifications and which start date you are available for (one or both). Applicants that cannot commit to the full 12-month period will not be considered.
