    Houston Audubon seeks an independent, experienced, and organized professional to manage and support volunteer involvement throughout the organization.  The successful candidate will collaborate with program managers and directors to create, coordinate, and support a comprehensive volunteer plan that includes the recruitment, training, processing, retention, and recognition of more than 300 regular volunteers. 


    Background ‐ About Houston Audubon 
    Houston  Audubon  is  a  nonprofit  organization  established  in  1969  to  conserve  wildlife  and  natural  resources on the Upper Texas Coast.  We have a rich history of advancing our mission with positive local, regional and global impact through sanctuary and habitat management, environmental education and conservation advocacy.  Houston Audubon owns and manages 17 nature sanctuaries in the Upper Texas Coast area providing over 4,000 acres of wetlands, piney wood forest, coastal woodlots and prairie, and beach that serve as critical habitat for over 300 species of migratory and resident birds.  Houston Audubon sanctuaries also serve as community assets where people walk, commune with nature, learn, meditate, socialize and explore.  We deliver over 700 nature‐based program experiences for children and adults every year.   

    Position Title: Volunteer Manager

    Office Location: Houston Audubon headquarters   
     

    Position Summary: The Volunteer Manager is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising a community of volunteers who are committed to supporting Houston Audubon’s efforts in nature education programming, habitat restoration, trail maintenance, native plant nursery operations, and general administration for the organization.  We are searching for a candidate with prior experience in volunteer management to grow the volunteer program, implement new processes and procedures, and build strong interdepartmental relationships to ensure volunteer needs are met. The Volunteer Manager reports to the Development Director and works with all staff to advance a positive, inclusive, and supportive community that advances our conservation mission.  

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

    • Identify, develop, and implement creative volunteer recruitment strategies and methods to attract and retain a sufficient pool of volunteers to maintain efficient operations as part of a strategic plan
    • Manage all aspects of volunteer placement including recruitment, screening, and training of volunteers.  Coordinate across all departments to ensure volunteer needs are met
    • Oversee and coordinate the volunteer program, including creating volunteer registration forms, managing volunteer information, scheduling volunteers, soliciting feedback from volunteers and staff, training staff on volunteer management, preparing and managing the volunteer program budget, and serving as the point person for volunteers upon arrival at volunteer events
    • Develops structures and functions that promote clear, collaborative communication between program areas and volunteers; ensure departments’ volunteer needs are met and goals are supported through regular communication and planning meetings
    • Build relationships and partnerships with local organizations, community leaders, service organizations, and school and scout groups to advance volunteer program capacity and outreach
    • Develop volunteer training manual and provide support, training, and guidance to staff to help manage volunteers; work with staff to resolve conflicts or challenges between volunteers and staff, visitors, or other volunteers
    • Develop procedures to track volunteer hours and implement recognition and award program
    • Attend community outreach events regularly where Houston Audubon has a table presence as well as at signature Houston Audubon events to recruit volunteers
    • Plan, organize, execute and attend volunteer focused special events such as the annual volunteer appreciation picnic, award ceremonies, etc.
    • Evaluate, update, and communicate volunteer safety protocols and Houston Audubon key messages through regular volunteer training sessions
    • Provide regular and ongoing communication to volunteer community through newsletters, social media, and email; write articles on volunteers
    • Responsible for creating a culture within the volunteer program that is welcoming and inclusive of diverse cultures and backgrounds, and increasingly representative of the greater community; and for encouraging a culture of philanthropy within the volunteer program, ensuring that staff recognize the importance of volunteers as potential donors
    • Produce reports on volunteer operations, including statistical information used for grants and outreach
    • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds

    Minimum Qualifications:  

    • Bachelor’s degree and experience in nonprofits, natural resources, recreation management or similar with a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated program management experience
    • Prior experience working with volunteers, service in a volunteer program, or program management

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Strong time, project and organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, centralized database system and knowledge of maintaining confidential data
    • Experience creating policies and procedures as it relates to volunteer program including development of training manuals and other program materials
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate and present clearly and to varied audiences
    • Proven ability to work in a team environment and with internal and external partners
    • Ability to represent Houston Audubon with a high level of discernment, integrity, and professionalism
    • Ability to travel to our coastal sanctuaries and work weekends as needed

    The Houston Audubon headquarters is located at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary in the Memorial area of West Houston.
