POSITION SUMMARY

The Energy Scientist will build and maintain a program to reduce the conflict between energy and raptor conservation. Specifically, this person will address electrical infrastructure, wind energy, and carbon credits. This position works closely with The Peregrine Fund’s international, domestic, scientific, and development staff to fund and conduct research across the mitigation hierarchy.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

Identify hypotheses or research areas that will reduce uncertainty regarding the efficacy of mitigation actions.

Identify the most impactful sectors, places, and techniques for mitigation. 

Help design studies to test hypotheses.

Hire and manage technicians.

Collaborate with energy producers, government agencies, NGOs, local entities, and other stakeholders. 

Publish results in peer-reviewed outlets.

Present results at conferences and other events.

Advise The Peregrine Fund on issues related, but not limited to, wind energy, power lines, and carbon credits.

Help secure funding for The Peregrine Fund’s energy program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master of Science with an emphasis in wildlife ecology, wildlife biology, natural resources, conservation, or a closely related biological field.

Five years of experience studying or managing the effects of energy infrastructure on wildlife populations.

One or both of the following:

Familiarity with US regulations and International Finance Corporation policies regarding mitigation for effects of renewable energy on wildlife populations. 

Familiarity with international regulations for carbon credits. 

Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn, techniques to mitigate the effects of renewable energy on wildlife populations. 

Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, quantitative methods to estimate numbers of fatalities from carcass surveys.

Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, the ‘Cochrane model’ for estimating mitigation credits.

Experience managing large databases.

Comfortable working alone and as a member of a team.

Good networking skills.

Familiarity with raptor biology and conservation.

Established network of collaborators in the energy sector. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PhD with an emphasis in wildlife ecology, wildlife biology, natural resources, conservation, or a closely related biological field.

Experience managing a field crew. 

Ability to quantitatively estimate numbers of fatalities from carcass surveys.

Publication record on the effects of energy infrastructure on wildlife conservation. 

Familiarity with compensatory mitigation for eagle mortality in the US, especially powerline retrofitting, removing carcasses from roadsides, and abatement of lead poisoning. 

Ability to use the ‘Cochrane model’ to estimate mitigation credits. 

Experience with the International Finance Corporation's Performance Standards, especially PS6.

Expert in raptor biology and conservation.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will mostly work from the office but will conduct regular visits to field sites both within the US and abroad. 

COMPENSATION

Annual salary $70,000 - $80,000
