A community hub of the National Audubon Society and one of three centers of Audubon Mid-Atlantic, Patterson Park Audubon Center is located in southeast Baltimore City, in a historic but modernized row home, across the street from Patterson Park. The Center works to engage participants in bird conservation, through environmental education, action projects, advocacy, and community revitalization.
Patterson Park Audubon Center’s focus is on Baltimore’s birds and communities, though its activities are not limited to the city. The Education Manager oversees day-to-day programming and volunteer recruitment/coordination for Patterson Park Audubon Center in Baltimore. This role coordinates school, summer camp, and community programming, aligning it with Audubon’s strategic goals and in partnership with diverse stakeholders. Audubon works with a number of partners to serve Baltimore’s birds and communities.
Patterson Park Audubon Center’s school programs are unique, utilizing Patterson Park as our outdoor “classroom” for six schools in walking distance of this city park. There they experience hands-on, science programming that meets curriculum standards, cultivate exploration and investigation skills, implement conservation actions, and grow as future leaders and stewards. Principals commit all kids in participating grades to the multi-part Audubon program, a unique and integral part of their elementary school experience. On board for more than your average field trips, each student visits with Audubon in fall, winter, and spring, building on environmental concepts and spiraling through our curriculum as they make their way from pre-K to fifth grade. Audubon educators stitch together these concepts through the years and lead students in age-appropriate conservation action.
The Education Manager must be able to manage a demanding workload and a fast-paced schedule, while providing innovative ideas to advance the Center’s programming. The Education Manager is an important team member and leader, whose input will be valuable in the upcoming strategic planning process for Audubon Mid-Atlantic, which will shape the future of our work. They must also be a skilled communicator, able to effectively teach elementary students in the park and in the classroom. While this is the primary audience the education manager instructs, they may also lead programs for ages two – adult, including public programs and summer camp. The Education Manager oversees a small team, which focuses on community engagement and other projects of the Center.

- Develop a comprehensive education program and strategies that align with Center, Regional, and National conservation plans and goals; develop conceptual frameworks, support materials, assessment tools, and other elements as needed.
- Develop and instruct creative, engaging science and conservation education curriculum appropriate for grades preK-5. Serve as lead instructor for elementary school programs.
- Manage program promotion, registration, scheduling, pre-program communication, development of materials, and program evaluation for all programming.
- Plan and implement environmental science, ecology, and service-learning programs for elementary school students, youth, family, college students, teachers, and adults.
- Integrate age-appropriate conservation action into education programs.
- Collaborate with local and regional non-profits, civic, and private partners for community revitalization and engagement initiatives.
- Develop new partnerships with city and state agencies, colleges, universities, research institutions, and community organizations.
- Serve as an ambassador for the Center and National Audubon Society throughout the community, including at conferences, meetings, advisory boards, festivals, and other events.
- Recruit, train, and manage staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds to support education programs and action projects; oversee volunteer recruitment and marketing; coordinate communication.
- Oversee all aspects of summer camp including seasonal staff and the development and delivery of conservation education curriculum; coordinate with camp partners on logistics, schedules, and troubleshooting.
- Organize and supervise stewardship projects.
- Participate in fundraising, new initiatives, and overall growth of Audubon’s profile in Baltimore.
- Write grant proposals and reports to support Center programming, track program data, and interface with donors and foundation representatives.
- Participate in staff meetings, discussions, and trainings related to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging; seek to implement best practices in the office and during programs.
- Assist in the daily operating and maintenance activities; write content for the E-newsletter, newsletter, social media, and other media.
- Manage live animal care (two turtles).
- Must be available for occasional weekend and evening work.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, environmental science, or related field; or equivalent experience.
- Minimum five years’ experience in conservation education, preferably in an urban setting.
- Proven skills teaching in formal and informal settings to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in educational program design and assessment, knowledge of wildlife conservation issues, and ability to articulate them and inspire participation. Experience with measurement and evaluation best practices strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Chesapeake Bay ecology, Baltimore City ecology, Maryland native plants, and curriculum standards or willingness to learn.
- Attention to detail, excellent time-management and organizational skills, sound judgment under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Capacity to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people, build relationships, be diplomatic and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the dynamics of a complex organization.

- Experience managing and mentoring staff and fostering a supportive team environment.
