    The Director of NJ Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) is responsible for the leadership and direction of the Bird Observatory which includes two sites in Cape May County (Northwood Center in Cape May Point and the Center for Research and Education in Goshen).  The CMBO Director (“Director”) must be fully engaged in all program platforms including migration watches and bird banding, special events, communications and fundraising.  The Director is expected to lead a dynamic team continuing to grow and innovate an internationally renowned Bird Observatory through advancing NJ Audubon’s mission and brand. 

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Leadership/Management

    ·         Develop and implement long-range strategic goals in support of NJ Audubon’s Conservation Priorities.

    ·         Oversee the daily operations of the CMBO, it’s team and all associated programs and events.

    ·         Manage CMBO staff and volunteers to ensure NJ Audubon mission and programmatic delivery in alignment with organizational policies and procedures.

    ·         Work with VP of Finance to develop and monitor annual budget and finance for CMBO with a goal of aligning funding to priorities and achieving sustainability.

    ·         Work with VP of Finance to oversee CMBO retail operations, physical stores and online FeatherEdge Optics (FEO) to strengthen and increase profits. Continue to foster strong relationship with key optic companies. 

    ·         Oversee facilities maintenance, inspections and improvements including buildings, grounds and onsite equipment and insure the safety and security of sanctuary property as required.  

    ·         Foster collaboration with the Nature Center of Cape May.

    Membership/Fundraising

    ·         Work with the Development team and other departments as appropriate to develop, implement and evaluate fundraising plan.

    ·         Work with Development team to actively increase membership, cultivate donors, volunteers and others.

    ·         Work with Development team to write and manage grants/contracts.

    ·         Work with the Development team and act as the lead fundraising representative for CMBO and participate in collaborative fundraising efforts.

    ·         Work with Development team and direct CMBO signature events, such as World Series of Birding and Cape May Migration events.

    Public Relations and Community Outreach

    ·         Build relationships in the local/national/international community, expanding NJ Audubon and CMBO presence to increase awareness, support and program participation.

    ·         Work with the Communications team to oversee marketing and promotions including publications, media, social media and community-outlets for CMBO and NJA.  

    ·         Maintain a welcoming space to interact with visitors.

    Programming

    ·         Work with the VP of Education to oversee existing educational/recreational programming; develop and implement new initiatives.

    ·         Work with the VP of Research to collaborate on seasonal migration monitoring and long-term population studies tied to NJA conservation outcomes; develop and implement new initiatives.

    ·         Work with the VP of Stewardship to collaborate on habitat management.
    Other

    ·         Participate with other staff to adopt a team approach towards daily operations.

    ·         Assume additional responsibilities as requested.

     

    Qualifications/ knowledge/skills

    ·         Degree in the sciences or education or relevant practical experience in a similar position.

    ·         Minimum three-years of experience in management/supervisory positions and coordinating volunteers.

    ·         Excellent birder with experience leading bird field trips, speaking to groups, and inspiring others to explore the natural world.

    ·         Good natural history knowledge of NJ flora, fauna and habitats with a strong foundation in conservation science.  Demonstrated fundraising (including grant-writing and donor cultivation), budgeting and finance experience.

    ·         Strong Computer (Microsoft Office 365) and Social Media Skills to fulfill the job requirements

    ·         Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    ·         Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines

    ·         Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback

    ·         Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude

    ·         Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality

    ·         Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed

    ·         Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and be able to lift at least 50 pounds in order to participate in special events

    ·         Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ

     

    Salary:  Commensurate with experience
