    Director, National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative – The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Management Board of the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI) invites applicants for the position of Director of the NBCI. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing national leadership for the implementation of the 25-state National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative at UTIA. We especially seek to attract an individual with experience in administration and budget management of wildlife conservation agencies and/or conservation non-profit organizations. Experience in government conservation policy is preferred, especially at regional or national levels. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.


    Duties include securing annual funding from state, federal and private sources to support national services and capabilities that enable states and their partners to improve bobwhite habitat conservation; maintain communication and relationships with NBCI members’ state agency executives for effective action for bobwhite and grassland habitat conservation; serve the NBCI Management Board, a national oversight body of state wildlife agency administrators, while reporting to the National Bobwhite Technical Committee’s (NBTC) Steering Committee; coordinate communication between the NBCI Management Board, NBTC Steering Committee and University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA); coordinate with UTIA faculty, staff and administration to integrate the NBCI into University operations and manage NBCI’s business; supervise expert staff working at regional and national levels; represent NBCI at national, regional and state meetings.

    Qualifications

     Required - A Master’s Degree or equivalent of education, training and experience in wildlife conservation, wildlife management, ecology or related field. A degree in business administration or management would be considered, in combination with extensive knowledge of conservation. Six years minimum experience, which includes conservation administration and policy responsibilities. Knowledge of business administration, management and budgeting; effective communication skills, including technical and popular writing, public speaking and interpersonal communications. Ability to build relationships and coordinate among numerous and diverse partners and stakeholders; secure, budget and manage funding from diverse public and private sources; produce effective progress reports on a deadline; travel overnight and out of state frequently. This position will be stationed at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture in Knoxville, Tennessee, or other official UT facility.

    Preferred – Knowledge of conservation agency, non-profit or business administration; fundamentals of avian wildlife ecology, biology and habitats – specifically northern bobwhites; fundraising, financial management, accounting and contracting. Sufficient knowledge and ability to think broadly, creatively and inclusively about opportunities, barriers and solutions to vast, complex problems.
