    JOB TITLE:   Human Resources Coordinator          

    GRADE: 22

    SALARY: Up to $45,000

    FLSA:  Exempt

    DIVISION/SITE:  Headquarters, Washington, DC

    REPORTS TO:  Director, Human Resources

    Basic Summary:

    The Human Resources Coordinator carries out responsibilities in the following areas: new employee orientation, employee offboarding, HRIS maintenance, policy implementation, performance management administration, training/development administration, and general HR administrative duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Employee onboarding and offboarding, which includes managing orientation schedules, processing new hire information, and conducting benefits orientations and exit interviews;

    Primary point of contact for employee benefits-related questions and assistance

    Employee file and information management, which includes HRIS maintenance and data accuracy; reviewing all benefits enrollment, change, and termination actions and routing the appropriate information to Finance;

    Administer Workers’ Compensation, COBRA, and FMLA processes;

    Administer the employee performance appraisal program and salary increase process. Monitor status of employee six-month review, one-year anniversary evaluations, annual performance appraisals, and all salary increases;

    Assist with the implementation of an organization-wide training and development program;

    Proactively identify and implement HR systems and process improvements;

    Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, which includes annual EEOC, OSHA, ACA reporting;

    Coordinate employee events, i.e. health fairs, flu vaccine clinics, employee appreciation events, open enrollment meeting(s);

    Maintain HR portal of the intranet, ensuring forms and information are up-to-date and relevant;

    Manage the department’s invoices

    Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive information;

    Perform all other related duties as assigned.



    2-year degree required


    PHR or SHRM-CP preferred


    ·         2 years of human resources experience required;

    ·         Benefits administration experience required;

    ·         Direct experience managing an HRIS required;

    ·         Experience with multi-jurisdictional organizations preferred.

    Experience may be substituted for education requirements.


    ·         Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and HRIS required. Experience with ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred;

    ·         Ability to create and maintain efficient systems and processes;

    ·         Strong written and verbal communications, attention to detail, and customer service/interpersonal skills required;

    ·         Working knowledge and understanding of federal and DC employment law (i.e. OSHA, EEO, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA) required;

    ·         Ability to research and become knowledgeable with state and local laws in the national areas in which Defenders operates;

    ·         Ability to effectively and equitably interface with all levels of employees;

    ·         Dependable, detail-oriented, organized, and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
