Job Summary: The Chief Science Officer (CSO) is a member of the Institute’s executive team and reports directly to the President/CEO. This critical role leads HSWRI’s scientific research operations toward fulfilling its public-trust mission. The Institute is an independent non-profit established in 1963 by the founders of SeaWorld to “return to the sea some measure of the benefit’s derived from it”. The Institute has a long history of field research throughout the United States, along all its coastlines, and around the world.
The CSO establishes scientific priorities and coordinates the organizational and administrative assets that support the Institute’s scientists in their efforts to achieve those goals. Working with the CEO and the Development team, the CSO will interface with the community to share the Institute’s scientific accomplishments, translate results for non-scientific audiences, and present the program in a way to attract further support from donors.
· Oversees a marine science research team in California and Florida of various disciplines. Leads the science team proactively for the Institute by:
o Establishing and maintaining a 5-year research plan
o Working with investigators to set research priorities and goals
o Working with science staff to stay abreast of new technologies, trends, and topical areas
· Develops and seeks funding to support their own research program
· Oversees the IACUC and associated project approval process relative to animal welfare
· Serves as an interface/catalyst with HSWRI’s management team, board of trustees, science staff, development team, and SeaWorld
· Works with Institute consultants, administration, collaborators and research staff to assist in media outreach and marketing
· Interfaces with colleges and universities to create joint research opportunities
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Ph.D. in a marine life science field, or D.V.M. with an associated advanced research degree (Ph.D., M.Sc.)
· Extensive managerial and research experience
· Experience in public relations and marketing functions to represent HSWRI’s scientific goals and interests
· Extensive experience in grant writing and fundraising
· Experience in establishing and executing strategies for conducting research and developing new scientific discoveries.
· Demonstrated dedication to ocean conservation research
· A track record of helping to develop the careers of researchers
