The Hilliardton Marsh Research and Education Center located in the boreal forest in north eastern Ontario approximately 5 hours north of Toronto is excited to be looking for a Bird Banding and Educational Outreach Intern position.  The Hilliardton Marsh is a high volume banding station that typically bands over 100 species of birds and bands over 12,000 birds a year. Researchers monitor spring and fall migration as well as band Northern sawwhet, long eared and Boreal owls each fall. It also features hummingbird and raptor banding. This position pays $35,000/year.  Applicants need to be Canadian citizens and need to be within two years of graduating from a University or College in a related field. The successful applicant needs to be proficient in identifying, ageing, and sexing birds in the hand and be a competent bird extractor. Preference will also be given to applicants that have their banding permit or are reasonably close to getting one. Applicants that can demonstrate a commitment to citizen science and are true bird enthusiasts will be given preference.  On the outreach side of the job applicants need to be self- starters and have strength in communication and organization and have skill in excel and managing data. Familiarity with the banding office software known as “bandit’ would be considered an asset. The candidate needs to truly enjoy being around people as the job requires the intern to be working with banders and the visiting public as well as visiting school groups.  The successful applicant will be asked to help develop interpretive trails and to work with bird banding data to summarize our banding work and write reports.  As this internship will last for a year the successful applicant will need to find their own housing.  Resumes complete with bird banding references should be directed to our research and education coordinator Bruce Murphy by email at birdboy369@gmail.com by July 21st.
