    The State of Florida's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) seeks a biologist to assist with ongoing research and monitoring projects for a variety of Florida's imperiled non-game avian species and associated habitats. The successful candidate will collect and record data; enter and maintain data; assist with the analysis of data; and prepare reports, tables and figures as needed. He/she will also will direct volunteers and OPS seasonal field technicians via training, planning and over-seeing work, and ensuring compliance with FWC and FWRI rules, policies, and procedures. The candidate will coordinate with multiple researchers and partners to provide assistance in a timely and professional manner. The candidate will maintain and operate all equipment in safe, working order, complete administrative tasks (e.g., time sheets, vehicle reports, invoice submission, etc.) as required, and complete all employee training as directed, including safety training, personnel training, and purchasing training. The candidate will also participate in public outreach events and interact with public as directed or approved.  Some overnight and weekend travel is required.     A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences. 

    Professional field experience working with Florida's imperiled bird species in terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal ecosystems. Experience using geographic information systems (GIS) and demonstrated scientific writing proficiency. Extensive experience towing and operating outboard boats, airboats, and ATVs. Extensive experience identifying birds by sight and sound, from migratory passerines to wintering shorebirds. Extensive experience handling and banding birds, radio tracking birds, and resighting color-banded birds. 

    (1) Skill in using Excel and Word, familiarity with ArcGIS and Access; (2) work experience in surveying, monitoring, and data collection with avian species; (3) work experience trapping, handling, and marking birds; (4) Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; (5) Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others, including multiple researchers with sometimes competing demands; (6) Ability to work under adverse field conditions without direct supervision; (7) Ability to travel out of town for extended periods and to work long hours in adverse field conditions; (8) Good physical condition; (9) ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles; (10) ability to use GPS equipment; (11) ability to identify birds by sight and sound.

    Valid driver's license.

    WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
