    Job Description

    The State of Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) seeks a full-time Bald Eagle Quantitative Analyst. The position will address priority information needs from FWC’s Long-term Bald Eagle Monitoring Plan and Bald Eagle Species Action Plan, which include: (1) the development of an analytical framework for using non-FWC data to meet long-term monitoring objectives and (2) using data from 45-years of FWC eagle monitoring to investigate local/regional populations, land use and habitat changes, and other demographic factors. This position will work closely with the Ecological Data Specialist and the Eagle Biological Scientist. Duties include performing quantitative analysis and modeling of scientific data using appropriate statistical methods and preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. For all stated duties, the scientific integrity of data and focus on the program mission are to be of foremost consideration. The position will be based out of Gainesville, Florida.  

    This position is funded through June 2023.  Salary is $25/hour DOE and includes health benefits (there is no personal income tax in the State of Florida).     Minimum Qualifications:  
    A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and two years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or 
    A master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional experience as described above; or 
    A doctorate from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in statistics, data science, or one of the natural sciences.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including preparation of manuscripts

    Must be able to understand and appreciate research problems from the perspective of a biologist or resource manager

    Must be able to produce graphics and summarize analytical results in manuscript form 

    Must have working knowledge in the areas of experimental design, linear models, generalized linear models, and mixed effect (hierarchical) models

    Familiarity or working knowledge in occupancy modeling preferred

    Must be proficient at programming in R (preferred) or SAS 

    Must be proficient in working with large datasets 

    Must be able to work independently and communicate results to team members

    Must work effectively and efficiently as part of a team with common objectives

    Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships 

    Familiarity or experience in avian ecology preferred but not required

    WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT?  Other Personal Services (OPS) employment is a temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment, and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
