    Description: The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is seeking Research Assistant to conduct and support daily husbandry and conservation breeding activities at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center in Volcano, Hawai‘i Island. The Keauhou Bird Conservation Center is one of two conservation breeding facilities in Hawaii for critically endangered and endemic birds. This facility is a crucial component of intensive conservation and reintroduction efforts for critically endangered avian species such as the ‘Alalā, ‘Akikiki, Palila, and ‘Akeke‘e.

    The successful applicant will join a team that provides a high standard of care to endangered Hawaiian birds. Responsibilities may include: maintaining aviaries, facilities, equipment, and grounds; preparing and provisioning food; cleaning and perching aviaries; managing reproduction in breeding pairs; observing and recording reproductive and social behaviors; assisting with veterinary care; detailed record keeping; entering and managing data; and other duties as assigned.

    Experience:  Successful applicants will have some of the following qualifications: a Bachelor's degree in any of the animal sciences; experience collecting data for a research project involving animal behavior or ecology; practical skills and experience that are useful for aviary and facility maintenance; at least 2 years experience working with birds in an institutional position while responsible for bird care; familiarity with artificial incubation and hand-rearing of passerines; valid driver’s license and in good standing with the DMV. Selected candidate must be able to identify diverse colored identification tags on birds.

This position will require working with federally listed endangered species, and all applicants must meet U.S. Fish and Wildlife requirements for permits.
