Position Description: An Avian Research Technician with the ability to identify all species of shorebirds in the Pacific Flyway is needed to assist in implementation of multiple research projects focused on nonbreeding shorebirds in the Central Valley of California and the Intermountain West. The technician will participate in field work and data collection including, but not limited to, completing shorebird surveys using a standardized protocol, supporting shorebird capture efforts, communicating with external partners, and assisting on project outreach. Responsibilities also include maintaining field equipment, data entry and quality control and helping with data summaries. A typical field day in the Central Valley (Nov through Mar) involves waking at ~4am, driving to the site, setting up banding station and mist nets, and extracting birds from mist nets, all before first light, followed by several hours of bird processing and potentially scouting by vehicle for more capture sites. A typical field day in the Intermountain West (Apr & Aug) involves driving to field sites to meet with partners and conduct shorebird surveys from vehicles or off-trail hiking, followed by driving to the next field site. There may be opportunities to work on other projects as well. Any use of personal vehicles for field work will be reimbursed at the current federal mileage rate. Due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, technician will be expected to follow CDC, specified County, and Point Blue guidelines to protect themselves and members of their crew and community. Point Blue is committed to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion at our organization, and individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Compensation: The technician will be paid $20 per hour, plus overtime (~ $42,000 annually). Point Blue provides a comprehensive benefit package including employer paid medical and dental for staff and 75% for dependents. Other benefits include retirement plans and time off benefits, as well as life insurance, long-term care, long- and short-term disability, and flexible spending accounts.

Qualifications: Desired applicants will have a strong interest in birds and conservation, and the ability to spend long hours in the field, including very early mornings (~4am). Applicants should have strong shorebird identification skills and the ability to stay positive when working in the cold and mud. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience with field work, scientific data collection, and extracting birds from mist nets. Participants must be able to work alone (after a training period) as well as work closely as part of a team with partners. Applicants will need a valid driver's license; Point Blue will conduct a motor vehicle report for insurance purposes, after hiring.

To Apply: Please submit your resume and cover letter to jobs@pointblue.org. Please use “Avian Research Technician” in the subject line.
