    The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is seeking an associate editor to produce the Cornell Lab’s Online Bird Guide, a premier destination for North American bird information on the All About Birds website, which reaches more than 14 million visitors per year. The associate editor will join our Birds of the World digital publication teams generating authoritative, accessible information about birds for education, citizen science, and conservation.

    Located in the beautiful Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary in Ithaca, New York, the Cornell Lab is a renowned nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing the understanding and protection of birds, other wildlife, and our planet through research, education, citizen science, and conservation. A vibrant unit within Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Lab has 12 interdisciplinary programs directed by full-time faculty and staff. Supported by more than 100,000 donors, the Lab offers rich lifelong learning opportunities through distance-learning courses, citizen-science projects, interactive web and mobile apps, publications, live cams, and multimedia.

    We are seeking an associate editor with strong expertise in ornithology, bird identification, writing, editing, and project management. Duties:

    ·       Research, write, and edit engaging, accessible, and authoritative life history and bird-identification information for the Online Bird Guide, Merlin Bird ID mobile app, and other products and publications as assigned.

    ·       Edit species account drafts written by freelance writers.

    ·       Use content management systems to edit and publish text, images, and image captions for species accounts.

    ·       Coordinate schedules and workflows to ensure timely editing and publication of new and updated species accounts.

    ·       Edit and proofread work to ensure appropriate style, relevance, and comprehensiveness.

    ·       Ensure quality of content reflecting the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s brand and the standards of Cornell University and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

    ·       Work under the direction of the Senior Science Editor to generate bird species information. Collaborate with team members from other units, including Communications, Macaulay Library, Multimedia, and Information Science, to move content through content management systems to final online publication. Collaborate with the Birds of the World digital publication teams to generate content across web and mobile platforms for audiences ranging from nature enthusiasts to advanced birders and professionals.

    Required Qualifications:

    ·       Strong knowledge of North American bird identification and behavior is essential.

    ·       Bachelor’s degree; up to 2 years of experience or equivalent.

    ·       Bachelor’s degree in science with relevant course work in ornithology and science writing/editing, or a Bachelor’s degree in English/journalism with strong course work/experience in ornithology.

    ·       Experience with word processing, image processing, and web publishing.

    ·       Proven ability to work in a team environment requiring flexibility with different styles and approaches.

    ·       Ability to work independently as well as within teams.

    ·       Excellent organizational and communication skills (written and oral).

    ·       Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    ·       Strong expertise in bird identification for North, Central, and South American species.

    ·       Graduate degree in science journalism or biology.

    ·       At least two years of experience in publishing as a science writer or editor for a nonacademic publication.

    ·       Written fluency in Spanish.
