    Animal care staff (ACS) are responsible for overseeing all animal related aspects related to running the Nature Center and the Wildlife Hospital, including, but not limited to; animal care during and outside of regular hours, ordering supplies, ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies, volunteer staffing and scheduling, and overall protocol development, implementation and enforcement.

    The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the highest quality and consistency of animal care through management techniques, direct and indirect supervision of staff members, volunteers and interns and implementation of new and enforcement of existing protocols. The responsibilities of this position cannot be accomplished alone so training and supporting a team of staff and volunteers that can be relied upon to be delegated to in order to reach these goals is of utmost importance.

    ACS must be able to work collaboratively with equal sensitivity to the care of the animals and the needs and requirements of the volunteers and staff, Board of Directors and the public, in order to build and maintain a respectful and professional culture within rehabilitation functions, education, and throughout all of Nature’s Educators.

    ANIMAL CARE RESPONSIBILITIES (this is not an all inclusive list):

    ACS works both in the Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital and will fill in for education programs as needed. (typically 36 hours a week) This requires the willingness and availability to:
    Work opening and closing shifts
    Cover education programs in the event others are not available
    Work flexible, constantly changing days and hours including nights, weekends and holidays
    Be on-call for after-hours animal care, volunteer and staff support and emergency situations
    Basic reception duties – answer telephone and pass on messages
    Maintain volunteers, paperwork, and documents
    Care for all animals on site
    Present educational programs as needed
    Respond to emails, texts, and phone calls in a timely manner
    Help maintain education supplies/office/animal care inventory
    Help complete construction/maintenance projects as needed
    Know and understand all permits and licenses Nature's Educators maintains

    Maintain smoothly operating shifts so that all of the tasks required to ensure excellent patient care and husbandry are completed by the end of each day. Duties include but are not limited to: orchestrating the flow of volunteers, daily feeding, medicating and cleaning of all animals, necessary medical treatments, maintaining adequate supplies and ensuring that preparation for the following day’s operations are complete by the end of the day.

    In collaboration with any other Volunteer Coordinator:
    Focus on volunteer satisfaction and retention
    Schedule, plan and participate in Volunteer Orientations and training classes
    Create and modify training and evaluation classes and systems for volunteers (both new and continuing), Volunteer Supervisors and Interns
    Schedule, plan and participate in volunteer meetings and trainings and appreciation events
    Build and maintain a collaborative, respectful and professional culture, and help build and maintain the same culture across Nature’s Educators.

    Ensure compliance with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, United States Fish and Wildlife, USDA, OSHA, etc.
    Assist as needed with required annual reports to said agencies
    Budget compliance; invoices, bills, identifying ways to save money, potential discounts/donors
    Order supplies
    Participate in all staff meetings
    Ensure and maintain facility emergency preparedness for on-site disasters as well as off-site response

    Minimum of 3 years experience in wildlife rehabilitation or education (of aves, mammals & reptiles)
    Registered Veterinary Technician, degree in biology, zoology, or related field preferred
    Must pass state and federal background check and have no pertinent criminal history
    Must have or be able/willing to get tetanus vaccination
    Ability to work flexible, constantly changing days and hours including nights, weekends and holidays. Must be willing to be on-call.
    Experience teaching and creating basic and advanced skills classes and trainings
    Computer literate, comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and other basic programs.
    Must be able to lift/move 50 pounds, endure long workdays in a physically and emotionally demanding setting while maintaining focus, accuracy and physical activities required by the job.
    Must attend a minimum of one annual continuing education training in the field of wildlife rehabilitation/education.

    Ability and desire to facilitate communication between all levels of Hospital staff and volunteers by promoting conflict resolution and implementing
    Great organizational skills
    Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
    Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities
    Excels at working under pressure in emergency situations
    Experience teaching or mentoring, either in a group or individual context
    Experience creating and implementing protocols
    While the ability to work individually without supervision is a priority, must also demonstrate an ability and willingness to ask for assistance when needed
    Positive team player
    Strong conflict resolution skills
