    • Employer: Florida Atlantic University
Location: Boca Raton Florida and the Florida Keys
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 01/15/2020
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Successful applicant will join an active lab at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) conducting research on wading birds and the aquatic ecosystems that support them <http://biology.fau.edu/avian-ecology/index.php>.  Position is part of a collaborative study of the factors controlling wading bird populations in coastal ecosystems and the linkages with fresh water systems.  Earlier phases of the study focused on the effects of sea level rise and on the development of a tidal inundation model that could be used to predict wading bird resource selection (see Calle et al. 2016 and 2018).  Building on earlier work, the focus is now on quantifying movement patterns and assessing predictive models of resource selection.  The project will consist primarily of capturing adult Little Blue Herons, fitting them with satellite tags, and analyzing movements data.  Applicants should have good quantitative skills, a strong sense of curiosity, and a demonstrated ability to work well in teams.  Applicants with an MS degree are strongly preferred, as are those with experience in avian ecology, movement ecology, or avian telemetry studies.  The candidate will be supported primarily with an externally-funded Research Assistantship of $20,050/year with tuition waiver and health benefits.  Successful applicant will start in fall 2020 contingent on acceptance into the Integrative Biology - Environmental Science PhD program.  The position is based on FAU’s main campus in Boca Raton, Florida but the field work is in the Florida Keys.  Boca Raton is located between the Everglades and an extensive coral reef tract, two of Florida’s most unique natural features.  FAU has 30,000 students and a Carnegie Classification of High Research Activity.  Application reviews will begin Jan 15, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.  Applicants should send as a single pdf, a letter of interest, CV, transcripts, GRE scores (unofficial copies will suffice), and the names and contact information for 3 references to Dale Gawlik at dgawlik@fau.edu (561-297-3333).
